"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost."
- John Quincy Adams
This morning, at 9:20 am CST, I did my civic duty for the first time in my selfish little life...
I drove a half mile from my home to a little elementary school in Evansville, Indiana, signed my name on a registered voter log, checked the box that indicated that my address was current, looked over a sample ballot one last time, and voted on an touch screen electronic machine - and I voted with both my heart, my mind...my soul.
With a bitter mixture of pride and sorrow I pressed the "confirm" button and walked out the door into the dreary autumn morning. I turned my collar to a world tinged with uncertainty and distrust, a world riddled with hypocrisy and waste, war and injustice - a world where voices that speak the truth regardless of its popularity are increasingly rare, and real political dissent is slowly being criminalized.
This morning, in spite of myself, I nestled my worried mind for a moment in the hope of this grand experiment called Democracy. This morning, in the face of all those internal voices that speak of its uselessness, I cast my will upon a rickety skiff of 1s and 0s, pushed it out into the great river of voices toward the shores of political hope. Who now can tell of its fate? Who now can assure me of its safe arrival?
Whether by calm Providence and faithful integrity it arrives, or by subtle, programmatic tempest it is drawn into a maelstrom of lies, I will know that, at least for the few moments it was in my hands, it did indeed exist.
Vote.

-- Not at all, my friend!
I am just very wary of having "duties" imposed on people. It has the ring of Stalinism to it.
If it is indeed a civic duty to vote, then why are convicted felons and people under the age of eighteen not allowed to participate in the political process?
Not to mention there is the fact that there are not always viable alternatives in election year.
To paraphrase an old saying from the wild west "The game may be crooked, but it's the only game in town".
And if by participating in a process you know to be corrupt and ineffective, aren't you just adding to the problem?
-----------------------------------------------------
What was "imposed" on anyone? Nobody is saying people should be forced to vote.
Convicted felons can't vote because by committing a crime they give up their rights. children can't vote for the same reason they can't drive.
Weren't you bitching on my post about gay marriages and civil unions being banned(that post wasn't applauding it)? Even if your favorite candiate isn't running their are other issues to vote on.
Comparing voting to a game in the old west is outright stupid. This isn't a game it is something you are part of, like it or not. And it may be a lesser of two evils but if you don't vote for the lesser evil, don't complain when you get the greater evil.
No you add to the problem by doing nothing. Don't try and paint apathy in any other light. Even going to the booth and abstaining shows there are people out there who are willing to vote but don't like their choices. It would show that their other issues and other constituents that need to be addressed.

A +2 for voting.
But this whole thing about voting being a 'duty' makes me physically sick. Autonomy is all about having the right NOT to vote too. Choice, motherfuckers, is a state of mind.

Might I also add what a revolutionary spin you are putting on this. I would normally accuse people who don't vote of being lazy and deserving anything bad the govt does, but now that I realize it is about "Choice, motherfuckers", and "it is a state of mind" not apathy that drives not voting I want to sign up.

I get what you're saying Brad, honest I do.
But I see things with a slightly nicer hue, ya know?
Yes, there is election fraud. Everywhere. Democrats and Republicans alike. There are stories in Virginia right now about people parking their cars in the lots at polling stations to fill the lots up, and both sides are accused.
But that's what happens.
It always has.
I shit you not. In every election cycle in the history of the United States, even during WWII, there were races that went to courts because of the way people were treated at polling places, or whatever.
But through 230 years, the system has worked. It still works.
Quit worrying so much, and use the obvious inteligence that you have to do something other than make yourself go bald at an early age, man.

Ready?
Set?
Go.
Good job, Brad. Nothing is as bad as you see it at times.
For example, in Denver here today, I saw lines that were 2 hours long in the more population-dense parts of town.
So, what did people do?
Did they leave and not vote?
(Oh before I start, in Denver this year, you can vote at ANY polling place, as long as you are a resident of denver, it's awesome)
HELL NO. They sent people out to other polling places, found out what the lines were, and went to where it was shorter.
And not only did they do that, they STAYED, and had a network of people calling with wait times, and letting folks know in liong lines, where the short ones are.
I don't care if they were Republican, Democrat, Green, Reform or Commie, we WANT to vote.
It's a good thing.
On a side note, Denver Metro area ia looking at a 70% turnout in a non-presidential year. Statewide besides Denver is 35-50%.
:-)
------------------
That's all well and good, Jay, but I was speaking more about not having complete confidence my vote is being counteed OR that the candidate I helped get into office will do the right thing. This post was about being at once proud to be a part of the process that our forefathers fought to preserve, but at the same time lamenting its apparent demise.
Just watch the "Hacking Dmocracy" link below, or read a few articles about election fraud from the last 6 years if you don't yet know what I'm talking about.

While it may indeed be a fucking useless waste of time considering how broken and manipulated our "democracy" truly is... however futile - the act is vitally important.
We the people should have the power. All of it. It's a shame that we don't. It's tragic that we feel useless and unable to affect change.
Until we get to a point where we no longer consider our government "them"... we have failed the core principles of democracy and in doing so have ultimately failed ourselves.

My constituency is unbelievably New Labour. Like 95%+. Any vote I cast is pretty much wasted - yet I do. I always do, because it's a right we had to fight for in the past.
It's my duty to register my discontent with the Government - and maybe in time, enough other people will decide to express their dissatisfaction too.

I've never tried to hide the fact of my political apathy up until the last couple years. In fact, I've always been very up front about it. I tried to vote in 2004, but because I had moved state, my Kentucky voter registration was no longer valid. No one has been harder on me for that than myself. I am personally ashamed that it's taken me this long to see some of the things I've seen and realize that I was part of the problem.

I've decided that you absolutely *must* be at odds with the government at all times.
We could be living in a governmental utopia and you'd still be taking issue with something.

Yes, because we are obviously in a governmental utopia now...

I voted this morning too. I wrote you in for each race. If you find out you've been elected to the school board in Champaign, Illinois, that was me.
