Ya know, there are times in life where I abso-fucking-lutely want to fly across the country to see someone face to face and watch them puss out and shit themselves. I wanted to do it with Caul, and with jimthefiend, and now you, spanky.

Caul... I never suggested that it was your problem - only that your words hurt people in a very real way. You are obviously quite aware of this and how you conduct yourself in this cesspool of a forum is completely up to you. I was merely using your 'words' as an example of how real the internet is - and it would seem that I made my point.
As far as the people who ARE hurt by your words - fuck 'em. If they can't take a joke or are so sensitive that your commentary actually hurts them - they should never have put them into that position in the first place.
Perhaps it is normal to have such an advanced detachment from what you say online.
For me, this is an extension of who I am. Even the negative comments that I leave all represent a little insight into whom I am as a person. Sure it is limited - and a paltry measure to be sure - but there are definite indications that people leave behind to indicate their likes, dislikes, tolerances, alignment, theology, philosophy... and all of these things are left under the guise of anonymity and relative impunity - but I would argue that in most cases that enables people to be more honest. I feel people have the opportunity to say things that they would be uncomfortable or 'out of character' to say in person - but the fact that they WANT to say those things suggests to me a truer representation to whom they are.
Of course I also take everything on this site with a healthy portion of salt... as a LOT of it is utter bullshit sprayed out there to pass the time. People who take this place to seriously are only going to set themselves up for giant meltdowns and elevated therapy bills.

My response to you - as well measured and certainly benefiting from the luxury of editing and a good solid spell check - is real. I have processed what you have said and done my best to provide a compelling defense of my position on the subject of our discussion. Given the luxury of time and opportunity I would say the exact same things to you in person as I have carefully typed out here.

rob, there is nothing 'real' about internet conversation. everything about it is second hand or worse. we dont even use our voices to speak, we speak through the keyboard, which in turn (due to the nature of qwerty keyboards) has created a pseudo-language of its own.
because of the almost complete anonymoty of internet relationships, people can and do say things that they would never say. this is not an indication of their true selves, but rather merely a display of the fact that people like to break rules, and some of the more fundamental rules are those which goven our behaviour in public.
there is nothing real about the internet.
