SNARK SAYS:
(a column by Snark)

"Couple of things to note:

We have an odd amount of people this round so the person with the highest Win% with a perfect score has been given a bye... namely Pentameter.

Stagger Lee has been moved up against Jack to fill in the odd spot in the 4-0 category.

Halfway through the tourney things are heating up. We had some amazing stories last round and we have some great stuff in store! Stay tuned people!

Special mention to Jack, JMG and Coyote for writing stories that made this whole ordeal worthwhile.

I loves me some UM."

Round 5 starts Tuesday at noon. Submission deadline is noon Tuesday the 21st. Voting ends Friday the 24th.

Good luck to all participants! Don't forget to VOTE!

I found your mathematical error. By my calculations I should be placed back into the winners' bracket of this tournament. See, in round 3 1/2, I beat LOOK!

*scampers off while you're looking the other way, leaving you to feel like a total jerk...hehehe*

Uh, good luck I guess to the rest of you.

There are only a few good stories each round. This thing should last about two rounds max.

Thanks for the special mention. :)

I scrolled down to the first image and there wasn't red by my name. I was afraid I was still in this contest. And then I sighed a big sigh of relief when I saw my name wasn't in any of the matchups. Too tired to write anymore.

Good luck to all the remaining participants.

I'd like to suggest we handicap the 4 for 4 crowd by giving them large doses of LSD so they can't form a coherent thought ....

Coyote had better write something a little more interesting than that shite Fetishist entry he had last round.

In addition to a humiliating loss for Coyote, I predict Cat McCattum gets destroyed by the Australian-Sensation, Stagger_Lee. Cat's outta tricks -- you know it's just gonna be another zombie apocalypse epic. *yawn*

I'd like to suggest we handicap the 4 for 4 crowd by giving them large doses of LSD so they can't form a coherent thought and chopping of their hands so they have to dictate or type with their noses and hiring sex workers to perform oral sex with a fury unimaginable.

Okay, so the first two options are extreme and could result in criminal charges.

The last one would work, though.

We could test it out.

I'll sit at a computer.

Sex worker 'A' could begin performing her task with much enthusiasm.

Someone could shout out a title, and after an hour or two we could all examine what has come forth.

From my unit, I mean. I mean my machine. My device. I mean my computer. Jeez.

I wasn't criticizing any one person, Razor.

I just thought it was ironic that NOT following the rules fucked things up a little.

But if the solution is to let Kaos and Coleslaw stay in, at least they are decent writers and the contest is better for that.

Wait, I take that back Uniter. You're right, if the rules had been followed as they were originally laid out, this problem would not have occurred.

However, it wasn't me not following my own rules... it was me laying out a relatively complicated tournament format and leaving Snark et al to deal with it, and not clarifying what was to be done with people who forfeitted.

Because there was no explicit information about what to do, they made a decision that seemed sensible to them, however it threw the tournament out of mathematical harmony.

My fault is one of inattention, and not intentionally breaking the rules we set down.

I will clarify how forfeits are to be handled for UM V, so there won't be any confusion.

I have submitted my proposed suggestion to Snark... it should fix the problems, and give a bye to stagger - if he accepts my proposal.

Your solution is to cancel the most interesting matchup and allow a bye to a now different person, when if you had simply stuck by your own rules there would be an even number, and thus no problem.

If someone makes a mistake and posts too late, that sounds like a forfeit to me.

Why not allow Kaos in? He was only 12 hours late, or whatever. I seriously doubt the fact that he failed to submit an entry had anything to do with the fact his opponent didn't hit the submit button five minutes earlier.

A bye should be avoided if possible, and would not even be an issue here if you followed your own rules.

------------------

That is an incorrect mathematical analysis.

As I said, I have been *REALLY* farking busy with my move and my two jobs. This entire problem was caused by an error that occurred after the *FIRST* round of UM IV, leaving an incorrect number of people in the tournament, which inevitably resulted in an incorrect set of matchups that has just reared its ugly head.

Until I got a set of emails about the problem, I hadn't even looked at the UM IV Matchups this whole time, except to glance and see who made it how far. It took a detailed inspection.

However, for the record, allowing Kaos back in and giving out no byes is an equally acceptable alternative solution. The important thing is to have the 4-0 people in one bracket, and to have the right number of survivors going into the next round.

I don't know what happened with the forfeits and haven't made it my business. I am simply trying to correct a data processing error that has gummed up the works, and therefore proposed a solution that was not based around adding people back into the tournament.

Snark, please read over this and make your decision. Allowing Kaos back into the tournament and handing out no byes is mathematically equivalent to giving stagger a bye.

If someone missed the deadline, they missed it.
If an entrant submitted 49 seconds late, they must've had their entry a minute early, too.

Regardless, if you stuck to the rules, wouldn't this entrant be out, leaving you with an even number, and no need to give out a bye?

Just curious.

I guess this is what I was asking about also.

No real answer yet though.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

1 - I failed to even come up with anything of merit by the deadline. I thought it was midnight, and that I had a few more hours. Every round before this, I had posted my entry days ahead of time. I totally botched this, and I think the programming somehow effected Murphy's entry because...

2 - accordingly, he posted 49 seconds late. However, on the front page that day, there was a UM post directly above his. Logic dictates that someone posted their entry AFTER him, yet it was accepted into the UM programming because that person's opponent had already posted their entry.

3 - Regardless, we're talking about 49 seconds here - not even a full minute.

I am so busy moving (hours a day packing at this point) that I haven't had much of a chance to look over what's going on with the brackets.

I just got an email from Snark (that he actually sent a couple days ago) asking me to help figure this out, so I apologize for not being involved.

At some point, there was a mathematical error and things got jacked up. There should not have been an odd number of undefeated players until such time as we were down to one undefeated person 2 rounds from the end.

As things stand, I would reccommend moving the 3-1 player with the worst percentage up to the 4-0 bracket against the 4-0 person who's not getting a bye. Stagger is right, he should not be being penalized for his good percentage.

I am going to go back and look at all the brackets and see if I can figure out where things went wrong, and see if I can help out with a course correction.

I'm now thinking about this way too much, but suppose this:

Stagger_Lee loses this round, so that in Round 6, there are still 3 competitors with undefeated records. That means you have to pull up either domenad or Coyote, pissing them off as well.

So then in Round 6, if domenad/Coyote wins, there's only one person left with a perfect record by Round 7, with four people having one loss.

Is someone going to get a bye in Round 7, namely, the person with the most perfect record? Cause that would be uuuuuuuuber ghey.

And if that happens, that means you have to give someone else a bye in Round 8, cause then there's only three competitors left.

By the logic of giving the person with the best record a bye, Pentameter could get into the final match-up by only writing one more story in Round 6, skipping Rounds 5, 7, and 8.

Which is ghey.

Agreed.

I think I could take a girl. If not, being dominated by a girl wouldn't be such a bad thing either. With Pentameter it's a win-win for my twisted ego.

And I would rather not face that funny-talking gentleman who lives on the ass end of the planet, thank-you-very-much.

So you have to give Pent a freebie and move Stag up to the winners section?

Didn't you spend hours and hours designing an overly complicated system so this kinda thing wouldn't happen?

Coleslaw submitted 49 seconds late, kaos didn't submit at all. http://www.ubersite.com/m/95450 is his post, it posted it to the front page for him and not the UM page.

And therefore, he moves on.

Interesting.

*yawn*

The rest are up for grabs.

And yeah, I don't like how Pentameter got the bye. That's like saying, "You're already dominating, let's make your road to victory that much easier."

If anything, Stagger_Lee should get the bye, since he has the highest winning percentage of the losers' bracket. Hence, "Here, take a break. You lost once, sure, but you've more than made up for it. By maintaining a 71%, even with a loss, you've shown you got guts, kid."

Aw man...I've entered that extremely annoying spot where no matter what percentage I win by, I'll always hover around a 60%, making sure I've got the last spot in the first column.

That means no more slaughterfests, only competition with people damn near the exact same % as me.

Greeeeat.

Um... as the HIGHEST win percentage, shouldn't I be against EASIER opposition? Why is my reward to battle it out in the winner's bracket?

Mind you, I didn't exactly earn my win percentage. I've had two opponents who've basically forfeited.

Rewired (DOUBLE FORFEIT - Coleslaw advances due to technicality.)

What kind of technicality allows a forfeit to move on?

Was it computer related? Time related? Did the system drop the entry?

Just curious is all.

Good luck everybody.
