Alright, this is a copy/paste, but I still think you all will enjoy it. My friend John just wrote it for Virtual Citizens (http://www.virtualcitizens.com/article.php?shorttitle=Thanksgiving+a+Time+of+Remembrance).

Thanksgiving a Time of Remembrance
John Calvin Jones, PhD, JD
http://www.virtualcitizens.com
2006-11-23

I remember that a group of religious zealots and ethnic bigots attacked, killed and enslaved men, women and children in places we now call New England.[1]

I remember the lies of Vietnam - that the U.S. was attacked, that communism was out to get us. How true are the words of Muhammad Ali today? Unlike Michael Richards, no Viet Cong ever called me, or anyone else, "Nigger."

I remember that Mumia Abu-Jamal is still in prison, awaiting justice - as did Stanley Tookie Williams

I remember that Bush lied about: (1) Iraq having WMDs; (2) a link and or relations between Saddam's regime and al Qaeda; and (3) not authorizing organized and systematic torture of detainees.

I remember that G. W. Bush admitted that he ordered the NSA to conduct warrantless wiretaps - in blatant disregard of American law and the Constitution.

I remember that Bush has ordered, engineered and overseen the slaughter of thousands of innocent people in Iraq and elsewhere - meaning that he is a war criminal.

I remember that Bush pushed for and signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006, without any caveats in the form of signing statements, in order to give himself immunity from civil or criminal prosecution for his involvement in that torturing and killing innocent men and children in Guantánamo, Cuba or for the crime that is extraordinary rendition (suffered by Maher Arar, Khalid al-Masri and others).

I remember that though he was elected in a relative landslide, Richard Nixon decided to resign rather than suffer impeachment and conviction for breaking American law, violating the Constitution and an abuse of power.

I remember that Nixon's crimes included organizing and authorizing illegal wiretaps and spying on Americans (usually political enemies) without a court warrant.

I remember that the nation was not irreparably harmed by the actions against Nixon, nor even the farcical efforts to oust Bill Clinton.

I remember that in the current class and culture war, the rich and the Right pursue a scorched earth policy - win at all costs as Mehlman and Rove exercise self-hate, bigotry and elitism, in their effort to exploit homophobia, racism, and mistaken economic beliefs of so-called Christians and the poor.

I remember that Nancy Pelosi is simply another face of wealth and privilege who cares less about the Constitution that she does about her own fleeting hold on power.

As a child growing up in the United States, I was told the foundation myths of the United States. These included a rosy picture of stalwart and peace-seeking Christians who, as victims of circumstance landed in Plymouth, yet through no fault of their own, soon faced hunger and starvation. My ignorant, or knowingly racist teachers explained that the noble savages - who just happened not to exist anymore - decided to share their bounty and teach the Pilgrims how to farm.

How eerily do the lies of the past of those non-American, European colonizers parallel the crime against humanity we see suffered in Iraq (and Afghanistan) today?

Led by people like John Mason, in the 1630s, in what is now Connecticut, English and Dutch invaders killed men, women, and children, burning many alive. They sold survivors into slavery. [2] About those to whom we attribute Thanksgiving, their legacy is built upon stolen crops, burned crops, and murder - often achieved through the provision of small pox laden blankets.[3]

And so today, Bush ordered the invasion and conquest of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands killed by American bombs and bullets - some burned alive with chemical weapons like white phosphorous and bunk busting bombs. On the 2006 campaign trail, Bush openly celebrated the fact that now Iraqi oil was not in the hands of people who might raise the price on Americans - implying that record profits for his friends in the oil business are now acceptable as the petroleum economy is safely in the hands of Americans instead of, oh God no, the indigenous peoples of the world. Instead of sowing salt into the fields of Iraq, Bush's bounty has irradiated the fertile land between two rivers with depleted uranium ... now cancers grow and babies are deformed in record numbers. What will the future hold?

So we give thanks. I prefer to remember, and urge for the impeachment of the murderous war criminals. Recently Lawrence O'Donnell claimed that 99% of Americans have no attachment to the war in Iraq as they have not made any sacrifices, and have no relatives in the military deployed to Iraq.[4] O'Donnell concludes that we need members of Congress to push Republicans and other pro-war advocates to confront their hypocrisy and vote on Rangel's provision for a draft. O'Donnell is wrong - we do not need more posturing and needless votes. We need impeachment - we need to show thanks to those who helped to create a system of government that empowers the elected body to correct and thwart efforts of empire.

That's a great point. In fact, most Mexicans, for example, looks down upon the Conquistador's and especially the natives who helped them. "La Malinche", the woman who helped Cortez take the Aztec city Technochtitlan, has been reamed in Mexican history; she is even believed to be one of the sources for the original story of La Llorona.

-----------------

They look down on conquestadors because mexico is 90% mixed.

Not because of any injustice that was done. It is a sorry country who looks back on pre-conquestador times as the only shining beam of light in its history.

----------------

The number 0, an extremely precise calendar (better than any else in the world at its time of creation), a base 20 mathematical system (simple to understand), advanced "milpa" farming techniques (used by most of the natives, but the Aztecs and previous empires preferred the expansionary slash-and-burn method), an ingenious and super-efficient canal system (by water is the most efficient way to travel and trade), and highways were a few of the previous civilizations' most advanced inventions. Pre-Spanish Conquistador society was nothing to scoff at. At the time of the Aztecs, it's true that the Aztecs had become obsessed with expansion, slaughter and deity-inspired sacrifice, but they were already over-reached in their empire and on the down-slope. Still, we shouldn't assume that the natives would not have been fine or were incapable of advancement without the "holy", Spanish Conquistador.

Bubba, you still haven't answered my primary question: Does the preexistence of deplorable behavior justify current and future behavior?

If you saw a guy lying beaten in the street, would you feel justified in giving him a few licks of your own? He was already beaten, so it's OK, right?

Obviously it is not.

I do not deny that all of humanity has done terrible things. I am trying to be a democratic citizen of the United States and speak out against injustice, while shaping the country to how I think it should be, which includes honesty about our own history. Again, Thanksgiving is a good holiday, as we should be thankful for what we are fortunate to have, but we do not need to Disney-style, text-book history to go along with it.

"My point? Why not rant about the inhumanity of Man rather than singling out the U.S.?"

I beleive the author was attempting to point out that in the usas case (and canada, everyone thinks of canada as the big cold usa state on top anyway) it has a national holiday celebrating their genocide and rewriting history. Is there a south american holiday where it is traditional for the population to dress up as conquistadors and incas and sit around a roast capibara in harmony and give thanks for the food, wealth and land accquired by mass slaughter? do you think when the british owned india half each family would black up and bung on a turban and pretend to have settled there in peace with the indians?
******
I believe the "party" with the indians preceded the slaughter of their offspring by a generation or so.

Am I responsible for what mt Grandfather and Father did? No.

---------

let's not forget either the fact that africans sold defeated tribes to the whites for slavery too. that they kept slaves and in some places still do. that every 30 fucking seconds it seems someone's renamed a country because the next dictator killed the last one and has since proceeded to kill anyone that had anything to do with the former government. idi amin ring a bell?

did you know that the natives here wiped out a few hundred or so species before the whites got here? they weren't all tree huggers before we showed up. oh did you also know that they had slaves? yeah, defeat tribes, try and wipe out your enemies, take their women and children as slaves. hey guess what! they did that back to the white too.

moors in spain? japanese and manchuria and pearl harbor? germany and ww1-2? china and taiwan and nepal? british in australia, india, the us, canada, virgin islands, ireland, scotland? liberia? nigeria? zaire? gold coast? iraq in kuwait? palestine and israel?

point out which country exactly has a clean history involving no scrapes, invasions, insults, rapes, murders, burnings, prosecutions, persecutions or wars. please do tell.

lemme guess you hate christmas too because it's christian and therefore means hate everything else? but if you're jewish or muslim channukah and ramadan are just fine.

and you can fuck off with that kwanzaa shit early on, bullshit holiday.

i fucking hate people like you. history's written by the winner, deal with it and realize there's no innocence anywhere. even the people that lose killed people to get where they are."

If you aren't saying that, then what IS your point?

Consitiutional Law Quizz (as posed in Doonesbury)

Facts of the Case:
You have two presidents.
One takes the country into an illegal war of aggression, whilst lying to the people about his reasons for this act. He authorises thousands of illegal wire taps and other covert surveillance activities on the American people. He passes laws that degrade peoples freedoms and the environment in which they live, most of these laws are illegal under the constitution.

The other president lies about hooking up with an intern.

Q. Which of these presidents do you impeach?
A. The babe hound.

They should both be impeached. They both lied. Period.

Perfect!

Here is a wonderful chance for you to show us all how smart you are Bubba.

I guarantee all 4 people who are actually following along this 'foolish post' that Bubba here has no idea what my "stance" even is.

So how about it Bubba? What IS my stance, and why is it so idiotic?

You seem convinced that I am a retard - here is your opportunity to prove it. Right here. I'm calling you out.

Highlight something I have said, or perhaps delve into the actual text of this post and pull out some information to prove your point. So far all you have done is bandwagon Inion's reactionary drivel and done very little in the way of heavy lifting yourself.

C'mon - no one is really paying attention, its not like you can embarrass yourself any more than you normally do.

Of course I think you are WAY too chicken shit and stupid... but the elderly are always full of surprises.

She did NOT go on a non-Christian rant. As your previous review said, she pointed out that virtually every country and group is guilty of the things of which you accuse America. She pointed
out that what you did was prejudiced and separatist in nature, and well as condescending.
How's that for deductive ability.

Rob Berg, you've never carried on a logical discussion in your short, miserable life.

Again with the slurping.

Did you read the actual post Bubba?

hmm?

Seems to me you didn't, or at the very least you skimmed over it. MOST of what is being 'remembered' is conveniently forgotten or ignored every single day. It is astounding that there is such a pathetic level of accountability in this world - but guess what? Its retards just like you make it all possible.

All inion did was cherry pick 2 semantic points - 1 condemning the author for including a contentious name in his list and the other one inspired a tirade that claimed the US was not the ONLY country responsible for some of the more disgraceful injustices humanity has committed in recent memory.

"history's written by the winner, deal with it and realize there's no innocence anywhere. even the people that lose killed people to get where they are. "

Well no shit morons. How is that an excuse? How can that justify what IS going on in Iraq right now? Hmm?

What about the other points? Any "logical" response for those?

Honestly, the only thing that makes my short life miserable is stupid fuckers like you Bubba.

Oh, yeah. She also went on a non-Christian rant even though the central point of the article had nothing to do with Christianity, just the bad actions of so-called Christians. I guess logical deduction isn't your strength.

Dear Idiot author:

The Honorable Ms. De_Trua has reamed your ass as she is so capable of doing, and anything you say from this point on is worthless drivel. She is right, you are wrong. STFU.

-------------------

Oh, yeah. She also went on a non-Christian rant even though the central point of the article had nothing to do with Christianity, just the bad actions of so-called Christians. I guess logical deduction isn't your strength.

Bubba's only strength is his impressive ability to suck the ass of various people he 'respects'.

Otherwise he typically wanders around here like a cranky befuddled old man distributing random nuggets of stupidity like rock candy.

How so? All she did was essentially say, "But other people did it!" Correct, but it doesn't make it right. Besides, the real point of the article is that we shouldn't ignore bad things. We should try to make them better.

Also, I know that slavery existed before it came to the Americas. Of course it did. If you want a really informative (but boring) book on the topic read The Slave Trade by Hugh Thomas (It actually has demographic data estimates as well). Still, the preexistence of slavery in no way justifies it.

I don't hate Christians (my family is all Christian) and neither does John.

As I said in a previous comment, of course the US isn't all bad; in fact, it's mostly great. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be realistic about our history and the improvement we need to make. Again, Thanksgiving is a great holiday, and it's important to give thanks for where we are and what we have, and especially for our loved ones (sorry, I didn't feel like thinking of a less hackneyed way of saying that), but we don't need to buy into historical inaccuracies to do that.

let's not forget either the fact that africans sold defeated tribes to the whites for slavery too. that they kept slaves and in some places still do. that every 30 fucking seconds it seems someone's renamed a country because the next dictator killed the last one and has since proceeded to kill anyone that had anything to do with the former government. idi amin ring a bell?

Led by people like John Mason, in the 1630s, in what is now Connecticut, English and Dutch invaders killed men, women, and children, burning many alive. They sold survivors into slavery. [2] About those to whom we attribute Thanksgiving, their legacy is built upon stolen crops, burned crops, and murder - often achieved through the provision of small pox laden blankets.[3]

did you know that the natives here wiped out a few hundred or so species before the whites got here? they weren't all tree huggers before we showed up. oh did you also know that they had slaves? yeah, defeat tribes, try and wipe out your enemies, take their women and children as slaves. hey guess what! they did that back to the white too.

moors in spain? japanese and manchuria and pearl harbor? germany and ww1-2? china and taiwan and nepal? british in australia, india, the us, canada, virgin islands, ireland, scotland? liberia? nigeria? zaire? gold coast? iraq in kuwait? palestine and israel?

point out which country exactly has a clean history involving no scrapes, invasions, insults, rapes, murders, burnings, prosecutions, persecutions or wars. please do tell.

lemme guess you hate christmas too because it's christian and therefore means hate everything else? but if you're jewish or muslim channukah and ramadan are just fine.

and you can fuck off with that kwanzaa shit early on, bullshit holiday.

i fucking hate people like you. history's written by the winner, deal with it and realize there's no innocence anywhere. even the people that lose killed people to get where they are.

there are so many reasons for a -2

1. un-original, jump on the band wagon, i'm not from America and they are the cause of all the world's problems
2. Its thanksgiving you fucking asshole
3. copy/paste
4. it wasn't that well written to start
5. America kicks major fucking ass (yes our president sucks, yes we have done some regrettable things, but there is not better land)

Both John and I are from the US. Also, yeah the US is great, but it's important to keep in mind its weaknesses and look for areas of improvement. Thanksgiving is a nice holiday because it's important to appreciate where you are and what you have, but it's good, also, to acknowledge that the mythical story of Plymouth Rock in no way parallels actual history. See The People's History of the United States or any non-grade-school textbook on US history.
