I myself have ranted against Pop Psychology and the tripe that lines the bookstore's "Self Help" sections.
However.................
I'm getting really sick and tired of arrogant asswipes who presume to tell me that my field is suspect.
Some of the studies I've worked on have taken a year or more to complete. See, we use this silly little thing called the Scientific Method because, silly us, we've gotten it into our little heads that we should conduct Psychological research as, well, you know, scientists.
I am the first person to rip a new asshole in all the self-help gurus who write a best selling book.
I usually start off with "I'd like to examine your research."
In short, as reactionary, emotional, and homicidal as it sounds, I want to take my keyboard and hit the arrogant asswipes mentioned above as hard as I can on the sides of their over-inflated-ego'd heads.

I am fully aquainted with the Scientific Method, double blind studies etc. It's too bad Psychiatrists don't take this sort of painstaking care before pulling out the prescription pad.
I am less angry with the self-help gurus as I am indifferent; In a way, it's not their fault if people want to worship them and regard everything they say as gospel; They've recognized a relatively easy way to utilize the free enterprise system.
And if their sugar-coated messages seem profound to the general masses then is THAT their fault? It's up to thinking people to dig a little deeper and read a wide variety of sources when it comes to applying psychology to their daily lives.
forensicgirl3: You are obviously angry and upset about something. Is it possible that some of the characters here at Uber are playing you? i.e. making comments and assertions to keep you off balance. Getting 'one up' on people at this site seems to be one of the primary goals... childish as that may sound.
To comment any further, I would have to see some of the exchanges between you and those antagonizing you. Can you give me a few links so I can read them over? Or maybe a new post might be the way to go. In any case, my humble suggestion is to not let these guys GET you or get to you. Take care.

Pesonally I see homelessness as a major problem that is indictive of the culture surrounding it. I would say that the greatest indicator of poverty is the income gap(no evidence springs to mind tho). And in Ameica it's fucking huge. Same is true for my home country also.

P.S. There is an Uberite with nickname "Durae". She doesn't come around much anymore but I'm pretty sure she has some sort of psych degree. You might watch for her in the future. I liked Durae and always seemed to pick something up (learn something) from her posts and comments.

forensicgirl3: I've studied psychology at the university level and have done a good deal of reading on top of the study. I'm afraid I agree with iddqd's comment.
I've never heard of Psychiatrists as being on a level with "snake-oil salesmen" but many psychiatrists have definitely earned the nickname of "Pill-pusher". I have a close friend who came out of his FIRST appointment with a psychiatrist with 2 prescriptions!
I'm not trying to be inflammatory or stir things up here. In fact, I look forward to discussing and debating psychology and psychiatry on other posts. Many years ago when my dad was still alive, he would caution us re Pop-Psychology and how not to believe every single thing written by authors like W.Dyer and D. Chopra.
Again, my intention is not to gang up on you, forensicgirl, but this is about as balanced and rational a comment as you will get from iddqd :-)
Note: I am deeply saddened by the *real* street people; many of them have been dealt a bad hand.

well if youd read the response on the post you asked me to review (i cant remember it, its about some lecture), youll see that while i do have a degree of disdain for psych, i also acknowledge that it is also a necessary and useful branch of human thought, which has very important things to say. i just feel that it needs to be a little less regarded by the public, and by itself.
and yes, there really are some snake-oil salesmen in psych, arguably more than in any other profession (besides law and journalism and politics and marketing[though marketing utilises a lot of psych... bastards] - though the unholy quartet doesnt count because they are tools of the DEBIL)

here in aus where we have a fairly generous social welfare system (i myself benefit from it through study), i find it less excuseable to be homeless. however, most of ours have psychological problems and were kicked out of phyciatric hopsitals a few years ago when the government closed the down.
i mean its funny to point and laught at shit like this on the web, but i get the genuine impression this is your honest viewpoint. you probably need to have a bit more of a look at your society as a whole, and look at many of these homoeless people individually. how many of them have serious mental problems and are unable to even know where to begin to look for help?

Give me a break, Apollo. I grew up LOWER middle class, probably just a notch above the poverty line. I saw people make good choices, and bad choices. There should be a limit to the number of helping hands we offer to people who keep making bad choices. It sounds harsh, but there are only so many helping hands out there, and if someone can't change their ways and wants to keep hitting the bottle or the pipe, fuck'em. There are others who will benefit from the help offered.

I think if it were a choice between letting people freeze to death in Ottawa (it gets cold there yes?) or giving them some money and as a side effect letting a few people have the tremendously easy life of sitting out in the street begging for money - then I'm going to have to say that I go for 'not letting people die' approach.
Still - I'm British - I tend to be in favour of the welfare state and whatnot. It does annoy me to see someone breaking the system - but that's what happens whenever you make legislation to protect people - some take advantage. It's difficult to avoid. ""

No joke, my 25 year old son is homeless in CA...and has been since about the age of 16. He makes damn good money at panhandling, but it is all pissed back into a heavy heroine addition, which keeps him homeless as none of his family want anything to do with his fucked up life. It's a vicious cycle. I don't feel hatred for him...he's just pathetic and chooses to continue that life. I look at those pictures and my best guess that the bulk of them have such pathetic lives because of insane substance abuse. I'm not saying I don't dabble in it myself, but DABBLE is the key word.
Just my 2 cents.

I wish it was colder. One real good Northeast-style cold-snap and they would all be deep-frozen overnight. Hell, if that happened I'd gladly volunteer to be part of the crowbar crew (going around the city and prying them off of the ground since they'll be frozen in place after sleeping in pools of their own piss when the temperature dropped) to help gather them up and dump them in the bay or whatever.
