"The Secret Uber Wars" will continue on Monday. In the meantime, catch up here... http://www.ubersite.com/u/kaos-king/l/uberassemble

This doesn't even begin to show all of the fucking books lying about my damn apartment. With me struggling to get my writing published and my little brother with an English Ed degree and now working as the head evening librarian at KSU, we're surrounded. We get it from our father, who usually has three books going at once; a fiction and non-fiction downstairs and some fluff piece by his bed.

The wooden library shelves at my parent's house are huge. The game is to come up with a topic, (excluding sports) and to try and find the book concerning that idea. No where in the house is there a room without a bookshelf, or at the very least, a pile of books. My mom has more cookbooks than any normal human being should, too.

I took some shots of the bookshelves in my bedroom, along with the last photo of my main text research drawer. There is absolutely no purpose to this post...

"Different Seasons" and "Four Past Midnight are King's best short story anthologies.

"Choke" is my favorite Palahniuk ("Haunted," like "Joy Luck Club," could have been made better by combining some of the chapters).

I wanted to get the "Dictionary of Symbols," but couldn't bear to drop 20 bucks on a limited-use reference book.

No "Merck" or "Gray's Anatomy?" A horror writer should be able to check the names of what he is cutting off.

And where's your unabridged dictionary!?

Indoninja - See, I read The Dragonlance Chronicles when I was quite young. Coming from those first, The Icewindale Trilogy just seemed to pale in comparison. However, I know people who read Salvatore's books first, and feel the same way about Weis & Hickman.

---------------------------

I read dragonlance in 5th grade. It was actually the first book I ever read that I didn't have to for school. I still liked Icewind dale though.

Ho ho ho! Kent State has an excellent library. An ARL (Assoc. of Research Libraries) Library, like mine. They're paying him a salary and paying for the grad program? That's a sweet deal, he's really played his cards right there somehow. I wish him success.

Cyrus - - Whoops! Sorry, man... Kent State University, in Ohio. Their library is a two wing, 13 floor building - and that's just at the main campus. There's, I believe, six regional campuses as well. Yeah, it's a full time job and he's making about $26,000 a year just starting out, PLUS the university is paying for his grad school.

Pretty good, since he was only making $90 a day substitute teaching 3 days a week before...

OK - I wasn't tring to dis you or your bro, just sayin. Is evening circ desk manager a full-time job? He gets an office out of that huh. Wouldn't happen here, but maybe KSU has a lot more space to dole out than we do.

If he really likes that work, he'll have to get an MLS to really move up in an academic library. He probably knows that. Unfortunately neither KSU nor KU have Library & Information Science grad-schools. The only one in Kansas is at Emporia State, and it's not a very good one, mostly specailizing in churning out future high school media specialists. Colorado might have a grad program, U of Iowa has a decent one...

I wish him well. Obviously I like the work, and there some future in it. Our professional literature is doing a lot of hand-wringing these days about needing librarians of all types due to the old librarians set to retire in the next 5 to 10.

Cyrus - - My brother has 1) a BA in English Education. 2) Been working for the KSU library system since he was a freshman. 3) Inrolled in the Master's program for Library Science.

He runs the circulation desk from 3pm to 11:30pm. I don't fully understand the totallity of his job, but I know he has a crew of student workers under him, his own office, and a direct line. The way I understand it, he was somewhat uniquely qualified to take this position, a bit "groomed" to fulfill it shall we say, by the upper brass at the department.

Douglas Coupland is a fiction writer from Vancouver, he doesn't write horror. His bibliography to the best of my recollection:

Girlfriend in a Coma, Polaroids from the Dead, Generation X, All Families are Psychotic, Microserfs, jPod, Life After God, Shampoo Planet, Miss Wyoming, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Nostradamus!, City of Glass, Terry, Souvenir of Canada 1&2.

You collect books. I collect books. Reading books is good.

Otherwise to debunk a statement you've made here: As an Academic Librarian and Assistant Professor at a midwestern university, I'd say if your bro doesn't have an MLS, and probably also a masters in another subject, "head evening librarian at KSU" can't possibly amount to anything more than a proctor-like postion where he walks around with a beeper making sure no is scrogging or lighting fires in the stacks.

We have grad-students do that here. We have merit class employees with MS in english, psychology, etc., performimg duties ranging from slightly above that to librarian duies.

I don't mean to end the fellatio Juls refers to, more power to ya on that. I guess I'm being defensive about my profession. Little brothers with bachelors degrees aren't head librarians. Even at KSU.

For Frank Herbert I'd suggest checking out some of his short novels. The Eyes of Heisenburg fucking rocks. And for Moore a great one of his is either Lamb or A Dirty Job.

Oh and the Song of Fire & Ice series is awesome. Though I hate coming across series when they're still being written. I get mega impatient when it comes to books, if it's good I get addicted and just want to keep going.

Jack - - One of the things Iove about Lumley, hell... one of the things he TAUGHT me, was that you can put anything you want into a story. No genre should be absolute. A guy who can talk to the dead chasing parasite-like vampires from another dimension who work for the secret branch of the Russian KGB??? SURE!!! (and that was just the FIRST novel)

Nice. Not a big horror fan myself but love some of those authors. I noticed that there isn't really any sci-fi and I don't really like sci-fi myself either but you should check out anything by Frank Herbert. Not just the Dune series but anything by him or his son. And for a good laugh and awesome satire check out Christopher Moore.

was OK. Not his best , but OK.

It looks like you've got a shitload of hardback books in there, dude. Are you into weight
lifting and spending money, or do you belong to a book club? I have about 30-40% hardback
and the rest paperback.

I have a section of one bedroom for my Electronics and English texts, as well as many
classics of literature. My wife lays claim to the larger portion of the room, filled with science
fiction, somewhere between 3 and 4 thousand books. I'm old, remember? It has taken over

Susie - As much as I LOVE both Horror and History, I try to read as much other stuff as I can. I went through a Fantasy phase when I was younger, but so much of it is the same. Crichton and Palahniuk are both huge influences. I really like James Patterson, too. (only the Alex Cross novels) My middle brother stole most of my True Crime books. I'll admit a weakness for J.K. Rowling. I also absolutely LOVE the "Philosophy Of Modern Culture Series" - esoteric treaties on The Matrix, Buffy, Star Wars... stuff like that.

We share some books.

Which Kinbg book do you mark as boring?

I'm currently reading "American Gods" when I get the time (thanks, Jake). I actually bought Anansie Boys at the airport because I forgot to pack the former..I haven't read it either. I just realized I spelled it like Anansie too.

Kind of hard to see some of the titles. No Catcher in the Rye? No Inferno?

as a Frenchman. In another few hours, I'll be dead. I can't afford
to lose your trust again.
