Through out my little life I have seen many acts of bravery and I have witnessed courage in other people that has made my jaw drop. Not all of these examples have been as spectacular as a guy jumping in front of a bus to save a child from being run over by a truck. Instead they have been wars quietly waged with little or no support. The kids that watch a parent fight a losing battle with cancer and still get up to go to school everyday. Or the single mum who faces down two jobs and three young kids day in and day out, with out a brake or anyone to help. The teenage boy who stands up to his father for the first time and refuses to be bullied and beaten any more.
Some people are exceptional in their courage and determination.
Love can often drive people to commit acts of astonishing bravery. A mothers love for a child, a husbands love for his wife. Friends love for each other. These are some obvious examples. We've all seen the films, read the books or heard the news. At least once a week we hear of someone's courage prevailing over their fear, though more often than not, it's their love over riding thier fear, nothing else.
Everyone has their own personal hero. I have many. Some of them have the recognition they deserve, most of them don't. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things and sometimes it is the ordinary things that take the last reserves of our courage to do. Removing a spider from your bathroom, learning to swim, going to see the doctor about that lump that wont go away. Everyone has their own Everest. Most people don't even know what theirs is until they come face to face with it.
I can't remember who it was that said "do something everyday that scares you", but I know if I did that, I would live life as a gibbering wreak. Most of the things that commonly frighten us, do so for a reason. Namely, our own personal safety. E.g. Heights, snakes, falling etc. We have developed fears of these things because even though some are now defunct, a fear of these things, could at some point save your life. We don't (as a rule) all encounter dangerous spiders on a daily basis any more, but the fear of them lives on with us. Conquering that fear though can give you a rush like no other. Anyone with a fear of heights that has done a bungee will tell you. It's the biggest adrenalin rush in the world.........assuming it goes well.
I've done things that have scared me before, and I've done some things that other people have considered brave. I'm not brave though. Not about the things that really scare me. I am the master of procrastination and avoidance. To me one of the scariest things to do in life is to tell someone you love them, and that's what I'm going to do. I'm terrified it will change everything, though I'm more frightened that it will change nothing.
Fortune may favour the brave, but I think a lot of it can come down to calculated risk and only the individual can add up that equation.
That's the crux of the matter I guess........do I love him enough to over come the all consuming, bile creating, pant wetting fear?

The closer to death you put yourself, the more alive you are.
And we all know the people here live life on the fucking edge!

Don't agree with this. I don't know how to feel most alive, but it's not putting yourself close to death. Maybe putting yourself close to death as a way to feel alive is an indication of boredom? O's line is catchy though...
RE that post; I identify with the feeling you write about. I don't get it so crippingly strong though. I blame society, but I think it is possible to overcome it.

If something so wonderful and expressing your love for someone fills you with fear - you probably need more help than this website will ever bring you.
That and you likely need to pick better people to fall in love with.
