5 o'clock rolled around and I packed up my things. I stopped at Joe's cube and said "See ya tomorrow."
"Later."
I smiled to myself and walked out, towards the front door.
My plan was simple, I would wait in my car until everyone was gone. Everyone... except for Joe. Then, I'd go back in and confront him about everything. If he didn't agree to stop, I'd tell everyone, even if it meant my cock would get more publicity than a Britney Spears snail trail.
I sat in my Saab listening to 'Ride the Lightning' and getting pumped up. Nobody seemed to notice me as they got in their cars and trucks and headed home for the day. I was in my own little world, thinking of nothing but smacking Joe upside the head a few times until he cried like a bitch.
Joanne was the last person who wasn't Joe to walk out the building. She got into her minivan and took off. That's when I got out of my car and headed to the front door.
"Showtiiiiiime" I said to myself, feeling like an Italian in a Scorcese film. I slid my ID card through the slot on the door and walked in.
-------------------------------
Since it was now 'after hours', the computer had full control of the entrance & exit. You couldn't enter or leave the building without sliding your badge through the card reader. As an added measure, I went ahead and locked the bolt from the inside, that way our little "talk" wouldn't be interrupted by any unwanted visitors.
The overhead lights were all turned off, and only a few forgotten lamps in various cubicles remained on. Combined with the orange glow seeping through the windows from the setting sun, the office looked creepy.
I walked over to Joe's cube and peered in. The computer was still on, but Joe was away from his desk. He must be in the bathroom, probably working on his little spy camera. I threw my key card down next to the keyboard and started searching through his hard drive.
----------------------------------
I didn't find anything incriminating, and after about ten minutes of waiting with no sign of Joe, I decided to go and check the bathroom for him.
I walked through the office, glancing around to make sure I didn't miss him on his way back to the cube. I got to the bathroom door and walked through it.
Joe's dead body lay slumped on the floor in front of me, bleeding from a giant gaping hole in his crotch.
-----------------------------------
I ran to the nearest phone and picked up the receiver, but the line was dead. I slammed the handset down and started towards Joe's cube, hoping to find his cell phone, but the flashing green light in my peripheral vision stopped me in my tracks. I turned towards it and the hair on my neck stood on end.
There stood the tatai from my dreams. About five inches tall, little black stick-like legs supported his brown furry bulbous body. His black beady eyes stared at me while his pointy white teeth, still showing stains from Joe's blood, glistened in the setting sunlight.
In his little black hand was a tiny camera with a green flash. He threw the camera aside and charged towards me, squeaking a terrible sound that reminded me of worn out brake pads.
I screamed out like a schoolgirl being chased by a spider, and I kicked the tatai like a Nerf soccer ball. He went flying through the air and hit the wall with a thud. He squealed like a frightened pig and came charging back at me.
I took off running towards the front door. I unlatched the bolt and pushed, but the door stayed shut. That's when I realized I'd left my key card on Joe's desk.
The tatai was still coming at me so I ran towards the nearest cube and jumped up on the desk. I began climbing over the maze of cubicle walls to keep that little bastard monster from getting to me.
I could hear him running around, the pitter-patter of his little feet scrambling all around. Every few seconds he let out another squeak, as if he couldn't hold in his excitement at the prospect of eating me.
I finally got to the row that Joe's & my desks were on. I climbed the wall to Joe's cube and he was sitting on the monitor, his legs dangling down like an evil humpty dumpty, waiting for me.
I reached down and grabbed a business card holder from the desk I was standing on and chunked it at him. It missed but left a giant crack in the computer screen. I reached down again and came back up with a coffee mug. I threw this one hard, and it whizzed by tatai's head and hit the back wall of the cube with a thump.
"What the fuck are you??!?!?!" I hollered at it.
"Don't you remember me?" It laughed at me. Then I did remember.
--------------------------------------
I was down on my hands and knees, getting ready to lift the bedskirt of my grandmother's guest bed, when I heard something. A little scuttle from under the bed. I slowly stuck my head into the darkness underneath the Serta and saw the most horrific thing I could imagine.
A small furry-brown creature was eating my grandma's now-dead kitty, Pattackapus. It noticed me and stopped chewing, staring at me with those horrible black eyes. I began to squeeze my head back out from under the bed, but he spit at me, cat blood spraying across my face.
I ran crying out of the room, to my grandma, and she screamed when she saw my face. She picked me up and ran to the bathroom. She tossed me into the bathtub with all my clothes still on and turned the water on.
"Where is Mr. Pattackapus?" she screamed at me.
"He's.. under.. the bed." I weeped at her.
The hot water was scalding me but I dared not move. Grandma ran out into the hall and after a few seconds I heard her scream.
I stood up and turned the water off, fearing that the tatai had gotten her. My skin was blistering from the heat, but I just stood there in silence.
Finally, grandma walked into the bathroom, dead Pattackapus slumped in her hands.
"We will never speak of this again." She said, putting the dead cat on the floor and wrapping it in a towel.
"Did you see it? The tatai?"
"There's no such thing!" she hissed.
I realized then that she thought I had eaten Mr. Pattackapus.
----------------------------------------------
"No wonder I blocked that out." I thought to myself.
My mind cleared and I realized again where I was. The tatai was still sitting on the monitor, spider-legs swinging.
"I've been waiting for you" it squeaked at me. It stood up from its position on the CRT and leaped towards me, squealing, jaw chomping in anticipation.
I jumped down off the desk and took off running towards the break room. It followed me, chewing right through the wall of Joe's cube then scurrying across the floor like a nightmare.
I slammed the door shut once I got in the break room and started tossing open the cabinets, searching for anything I could use to kill this thing. I found a large carving knife in one of the drawers and grabbed it. Wielding the knife in front of me, I slowly walked towards the door back to the office.
I could hear it scratching away with its teeth, working through the door. I slowly grabbed the handle and turned. Once the lock was disengaged, I threw the door open towards me and jumped forward, running past the monster towards Joe's cube and my key card.
I got to the desk and reached down to grab my ID, but my hand snatched nothing but air. The card was gone.
I looked around frantically, but it was nowhere to be found. I turned around and the tatai was staring at me, ID card in hand.
"That's mine you little shit!" I slashed the knife at him, but he hopped back and I missed. I swung again and he sidestepped away. I pulled the knife back to throw it at him, but he lunged forward and sunk his teeth into one of my fingers. I opened my hand instinctively and drew it into me, the knife fell to the floor, and I cowered backwards.
Tatai jumped towards me again and I swung my arm out, knocking him to the side. My badge fell to the ground, next to the knife, and I grabbed them both and took off running again.
I was only a few steps from the door when I tripped on the carpet and fell to the floor. The knife skidded away from me, out of my reach, but I clutched the key card tightly in my uninjured hand.
I began to stand up but the tatai was on me immediately, his needle teeth tearing open my leg. Blood splattered everywhere and I screamed in agony. I swung my fists towards it, trying to knock it off my leg, but he avoided each of my tries. I kicked my legs frantically but he clung to me with his trap-like jaw.
I pulled myself up slammed my leg against the nearest wall, hoping to crush the monster. It yelped with the impact and fell to the floor. I tried to take off again but the pain knocked me to the ground and I dropped the badge as I reached down to close the gaping hole in my leg.
The tatai seemed stunned, so I dragged myself towards the door. I snatched up the key card as I passed it, and put it between my teeth. By the time I arrived at the door and pulled myself up to reach the card reader, the tatai was heading towards me again, looking angrier than ever.
I slid my key through the slot and the red light flashed green for a second, and I pushed the door open. I fell out of the office and into the cool outside air, the distant sound of the highway comforting me instantly. I slammed the door shut behind me and heard that awful squeal again. Turning towards it, I saw that I'd shut the door just in time to lock tatai inside, but I'd caught his leg in the door and it had snapped off. The tatai laid bleeding its blue blood on the carpet, its razor-filled mouth grimaced in pain.
I sat there for a moment, watching it. I took my shirt off and tied it around my leg, temporarily stopping the fountain of blood coming from the huge bite wound. I wiped the sweat from my brow, leaving a blood trail from my finger, and steadied myself as I stood up.
Never taking my eyes off of the injured monster, I slid my card through the slot. The rapid beeping signaled that the door was now unlocked, and I cautiously opened it. The tatai looked up at me with those black beady eyes and seemed to plead for mercy. I glanced around slowly, thinking, then stomped my boot down onto it. The impact made a wet squishing sound and blue juices squirted out in all directions. Strands of guts hesitantly broke free from my boot as I pulled it up and away from the dead tatai, and I scraped my foot against the carpet as I walked back out of the building.
--------------------------------------
I had forgotten about Joe as I got into my car and drove home. When I walked into the house, I told my wife nothing. I went straight to bed and slept until my alarm went off the next morning.
---------------------------------------
When I arrived at work, the office had been cleaned and nothing seemed out of place. It wasn't until I passed Joe's cube that I remembered his dead body in the bathroom.
Before I could react, Mark called out to me.
"Rick!"
I walked into his office and sat down.
"Rick, I got bad news bud. Joe had an accident on the way home yesterday. He drove his car off the causeway. His wife called us this morning."
I sat there in confused silence.
"We're going to meet in the break room and I'm going to give a little speech. Go ahead and log in and meet us in there in about, say, fifteen minutes?"
"Okay..."
I stood up and walked back to my desk. Opening my Lotus Notes, my eyes saw something that frightened me beyond words, and I yanked my head down and threw up into my trash bin. There was an email from 'mrs tatai' dated this morning.
I wiped my mouth and double clicked.
Staring back at me was an image of a tatai with a little pink bow on her head, standing above the bits that remained of her husband.
I grabbed my laptop and walked out the front door without a word.

My wife & I moved back to Virginia the next day.
