For years I've heard this old saying "..and the sins of the fathers are visited upon their children".
I never knew what it meant until today.
I called my house on my lunch break to gab with my brother for a few.
He calmly tells me that his daughter ( my favorite niece) overdosed last night and had to be resuscitated with the paddles..so bad the narcane didn't work. She almost didn't make it.

She's 19 for chrissake.
She's beautiful, smart, funny, tough...she's got it all.
Including needle marks in her arm from shooting heroin. At 19.
Including a father that shot dope for 10 years (and anything else he could cram in a vein) and drank like the Irishman he is.
Including a mother that snorted Peruvian marching powder while she was pregnant like it was goin outta style...God forbid she gain any weight.
My brother is devastated, he knows this road like the back of his hand, knows it goes nowhere...fast. He's the original DILLIGAF..has it tattooed across his back in 2" high Gothic letters. Knows that he's lucky he's lasted as long as he has, so many didn't, we used to put flowers on their graves every memorial day..it took the entire day.
She's seen what it does, agonizes over the losses and what it has done to her dad, her friends, herself. We've talked, she trusts me and says I'm her confidant, the only one she can talk to. I tried to explain, warn her where the road leads...always nowhere..always the same shitty place. I thought she understood. I don't lecture, does no good, nobody listens ( I didn't why should she?.. gotta learn the hard way. She told me she tried it and didn't like it..didn't like what she saw it doing to her friends... Zoned out, scrawny, sickly junkies with bad teeth and skin, nodding out in front of the TV and sucking their own kneecaps with no clue and no life.
Her father wants to kill the junkies she was with. I tell him that its not their fault, no one forced her, she's a big girl. Hurting them won't solve the problem..won't stop her from trying to self destruct. She'll just find someone else to get high with. I wish I had the magic words to say to make her understand..this isn't make-believe, there's no take-backs. Dead is dead. Some mistakes can't be undone...this shit is SOSDD.. Next time maybe she won't get so lucky.
In my mindseye I see her fast forward from the bump in her mother's stomach to the smiling little tow head with the quicksilver smile clinging to her daddy's leg... to the proud, pretty blond in a graduation cap thrusting her closed fist above her head in triumph..to the white faced, empty eyed scared junkie she will become.
It scares the SHIT outta me..and there's nothing I can do about it.

" WTF, man? Why did you type these?
2. Your formatting's terrible. Read some other posts and see how to do it.
3. DILLIGAF = Drunk Irish Liquor-Lovin' Ignorant Ghey Ass Fucker? The meaning of this acronym is not intuitive.
4. SOSDD = Suck our Shlongys, dirty Debbie? Again, the meaning of this acronym is also not intuitive.
Anyway, it does seem like you might have potential. Keep trying. Also, what Id said.

My rating reflects the belief that emotional pouring-outs of the heart such as this do not qualify.
Addiction is genetic. I know science hasn't gotten around to confirming this, but then again science hasn't really agreed wether all this heat we're getting lately has anything to do with all the shit we pump into as well.
As such it is a problem that must be addressed with members of the entire family that shares these genes. The fact that your niece sees you as a confidant is not really surprising. But talking to only one person now is not an option. I'm sure you're aware of this, but her parents must step up on this. Curfews, not being allowed to hang out with certain people, checking in on the cell phone every now and then. Something.
I know my advice is generic, but I felt someone needed to offer you something.
Though I must also advise that Ubersite is not the greatest place in the world to vent a personal crisis. As I'm sure you're seeing.
