Until this year I'd never done anything with stained glass but I found myself needing something to do to relax a bit. After visiting a friend of mine and seeing her work I was inspired to try glass mosaic and since then I've been hooked. Breaking the glass is kind of fun though it does tend to leave little slivers and shards of glass all over my work area but even better is the mind numbing task of placing the glass on whatever project I'm working on. Each piece is essentially a puzzle of my own design, there are no hard rules or guides to work from. This most recent piece is a Christmas ornament about four inches in diameter and is the first time I've tried mosaic on anything but a flat surface.

JonnyX was killed yesterday when his hard drive exploded and he was buried underneath seven tons of untreated waste material he was planning to post next year.

So far I've not sold any. Each piece I've made I've made for an intended recipient and so far all have been very excited to recieve them. I would love to try selling some but then I'm not entirely sure how to make that happen short of going to an art show in which case I'd need a small inventory so there's a variety of pieces. I guess the other way to do it would be to have someone commission a piece but so far no one's said "hey I'll pay you to do one for me".

The other problem I face is that these are time consuming and with everything else I do I end up with limited time to work on them. This one took about three hours to complete but that three hours was spread out over a week. The "hope" picture frame: http://www.ubersite.com/m/96362 probably took 7 hours over a three week period and the largest piece I did, also at http://www.ubersite.com/m/96362 , took about ten hours spread out over a three week period.

That's pretty damn cool.

I'm working on refinishing an old acoustic guitar for my brother-in-law as a Christmas/birthday gift. It's not of much value so I figure nothing I do to it can hurt it's worth. I'll have to post the before/after pics once it's done. He's a huge Minnesota Vikings nut, so I'm doing it in purple and gold, high gloss, replete with the Viking head logo for a decal.

I've thought of the whole lighting it from the inside thing and it would look very cool but I don't quite know how to make that go. I could take the top off and flip it upside down and make a little night light type thingy. hmmmm....

I'm covering a bowling ball in glass next. I know someone who wants a mosaic gazing ball for the garden.

Hell, I'd pay for that.

Now if you want to get Extra Saucy, try doing one that fits over one of the tree's lights so it'll glow from within and radiate your love all over the faces of your family and friends. Then get them all drunk and radiate your other love all over them while they're passed out. The sexy way.

A craft store will sell some stuff but your best bet is to find a stained glass type store. They have better equipment, and a far better selection of glass. When I started I bought a kit that included everything to get a person started, it came with nippers, glue, grout, and several squares of stained glass. Having said that if you want something a little more rigid many craft stores will have project specific kits that include everything needed to make whatever it is the kit is for.

Whoa. That's awesome. Can you just pick up supplies from an art supply store?
