Three days, two hours and 34 minuets ago I quit smoking. I didn't want to quit, I actually really enjoyed smoking, but the decision is no longer just about me and so I'm doing the right thing. Filled with determination and the full moral support of the bastards who've been hassling me to quit for years, for the first time since I started smoking, I really have every intention of following this through. So far so good. I haven't even sniffed in the direction of a cigarette and I have removed any form of tobacco, and smoking paraphernalia from the house and bunkered down for the long haul. I have refused to step foot outside my front door since I decided to quit. I figured that four days and I should be able to walk past someone whose smoking without wanting to French kiss them for the beautiful, cancer ridden smoke in their lungs. Out of sight and out of mind. That's the theory anyway. If the first three days are the worst, the hopefully I should be in a good frame of mind by the fourth day. Yet as with all my best laid plans the Gods have other ideas. Apparently my presences is requested at a good friends surprise birthday party tonight.......Foiled again.

So far I am giving up without assistance, i.e. No patches, no gum, no little pretend smoke stick. Cold Turkey. Surprisingly it's going OK. I get the old urge to kill people, but otherwise, it's going well. I'm just concerned about how I'm going to do in a bar, drunk and surrounded by people smoking.

Does anyone have any advise or helpful tips on giving up? Any tricks or methods to this to help make it easier? I have to do this regardless. I am not going to smoke any more, but I sure would appreciate any help on offer.

Thanks.

Helloooo muppet below! I'm not going to address most of what you said, because it's just shite for the sake of it. I will however state clearly, that I have no issue with anyone else who wants to smoke. Just because I have to quit doesn't mean I instantly hate all smokers.

By the way, I've still not smoked! It's just under a week now!!!!!

New year, the time for quitters. No one here gives a fuck if you smoke or not. If it doesn't kill you then and there, on the spot, it makes you stronger!

Smoking is fun, it looks big and cool, and it makes you look hard.

Seriously, this whole "down with smoking", "smokers are bad people" attitude the world has had for the last 10 years could disrupt the fine balance of the already over populated planet. Keep smoking up, keep the population under control.

Well, I'm joining you on the 3rd. Why wait until then? My best friends are in town from Thailand and they LOVE to party. The temptation is just too strong when we party.

I've smoked for the better part of 30 years...never really heavy, but it's still my crutch. Do I want to quit? Hell no! It's my way of dealing with stress. Why am I doing it? My husband, in a very polite way, which is HARD for him asked me to.

Cold turkey this time. I've done all the patches, Wellbutrin, etc. I actually quit for 2 years, then moved to Vegas. Talk about temptation.

Good luck to you!

I did it! I went the party, had a few drinks and it was ok. I had a few moments where I had to stand outside in the fresh air, but it wasn't half as bad as I thought it was going to be.

now I just have to get through New Years Eve........

Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it thousands of times.
I actually did quit smoking. Quitting with someone makes it easier. Don't go out to eat for 2 months. That's the hard one.

I'm in a quandary.

I know it's bad for you...but I love smoking.

So, I think it'll take a health scare for me to quit.

Funny enough, a health scare is what it took. I love (loved) smoking, but my family are more important. i will always put them first.

I smoked about a pack a day for the better part of 12 years; and I'm only 26. It's all about attitude; you're right. Listen to Sacrilicious. Don't smoke at all. Not even one puff. The worst will be behind you before you know it; don't give in :)
If it helps, think of all the hot nonsmoking chicks who wouldn't want to kiss your ashy mouth.

I quit 20 years ago because it was expensive. It still is. Add the money you're not spending on smokes over the course of the year and go someplace interesting on your 1 year anniversary. Spend it on something you've always wanted. I saved enough to buy a new Les Paul every year. I didn't actually buy one every year, but I saved enough money for one. Strat, ES-335, Carvin, acoustic, electric, steel, bass, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 12- strings.... I have a nice guitar collection after 20 years, all basically paid for by not smoking.

I'm made up about the support I'm getting. I will deffinately keep this updated, because if I can do it, anyone can. I will be the first to back anyone willing to quit, so if you want to join me on my mission, let me know. If nothing else, you've got someone here who is feeling it to the bone.

I'm not going to bullshit either, if I mess this up (which i have no intention of doing) but if I do, then I'm going to let evryone know. I really need to do this and I'm so glad I posted about it. It gives you more motivation when you have people backing you up and also you dont want to let them down.

I will be back online after this party. I know I can do this. I feel good about doing this.

+2 no smoking.

my dad used to smoke a lot. coupled with drinking and gambling all these vices broke my family in ways that were never really reversible. think of who you want to be! think of how your kids will look up to you.

i've always thought giving up to vices is a form of weakness, a self-betrayal. goodness knows many people are behind you in this. GOOD LUCK.

This has inspired me to re-evaluate as well. I have smoked for 10 years and need to quit or else it will be too long to matter I feel. I cough, I hack and I'm slowing choking myself. The best advice below, as I know since I quit for 3 months about a year ago is this...

Just don't tell yourself "It's okay to smoke one more cigarette." You'll start right up again.

It's true. You cannot do this to yourself. I felt so mad at myself after I started again.

Be ready for stress and think about your triggers for smoking. Booze? Stress? Morning coffee.

This is going to be one of the hardest things that you ever do.

Check in with all of us soon. Do another post about it and how far you've come.

Here's more inspiration...if you ever go back to smoking I will -2DIE all of your posts no matter if they are good or not. You will be hated by ih8u2man.

DO IT MAN!

Give up cigarettes for a small period of time- maybe a few days or a week, then take a day or two of smoking. Then do it for a longer period of time every cycle.

Good on ya for doing what's probably the best thing you can do for yourself.

I quit in June. I'll admit I sometimes give into the temptation when I drink, but I'm at the point now where if I smoke more than one in a night,I start to feel sick.

Different tactics work for different people, but some of my thoughts- I went without nicotine replacement this time, too. I know it was the psychological addiction that was my biggest challenge, and the nic stuff works for some, but I looked at it as something that would only put off my detoxing from nicotine. I'd already cut down to only a few a day (stopped smoking at work altogether, had my first smoke at 6pm) so I couldn't have handled it- depends on how much you smoke and your preferences toward breaking the addiction.

It might sounds trite, but your mental state and attitude have everything to do with your success. When I crave one, and I do (sometimes years later, I understand), I try not to consider it something I've been deprived of, but instead something I now have won control over. It's not a punishment, it's a victory.

I know it's not what you want to hear at the holidays, but maybe for a good few weeks- DON'T DRINK. It sets you up for failure. Give yourself some time to assimilate. But yes, do go outside after just a few days. I keep reminding myself that it's ONE thing I changed- and I wasn't going to allow it to affect my enjoyment of everything else. Eventually, friends, drink, and whatever vices you may still enjoy will still be there. And you WILL be able to enjoy them without cigarettes.

I joined the gym, and it really helped me start to manage my stress and find some balance. Get some fresh air and exercise. They really helped me. Find healthy distractions. Reward yourself in little ways. Or maybe make some cool uber posts.

Good luck.

Plus 2 for impending empathy. I'm "quitting" for the New Year. Last New Year I made it until I woke up the next day.

If it helps, my dad quit 15 years ago after smoking for 50 years (four pack a day at times). He used the patch and his lungs are clean.

I smoke more than a pack a day. I don't know if I'll ever quit, because I don't think I'll ever want to.

But, if I were to quit (and I've known people who have), I think I wouldn't do it cold turkey. You're at a higher risk to start again, and you'll smoke more if it happens.

I think a gradual withdrawal would work. Smoke a lot less. Maybe 1-3 cigarettes a day, and once you can get down to that, and be satisfied, then it'll be easy to quit.

My sister did that about two years back and hasn't smoked a cigarette since. She used to smoke about a pack a day.

I don't know...

But, good luck man, if you have enough willpower, you can do it. Just don't tell yourself "It's okay to smoke one more cigarette." You'll start right up again.
