I came home today and got the letter (that came with a cashier's check for $2900, to pay the taxes on the lottery money). I cashed the check at my bank and then wired the money to Canada to pay the taxes, blah blah blah. Now, I'm supposed to get this money on Tuesday.
Am I being duped? We shall seeeee...
In the meantime, if you won that money, what would you do with it?

you're right. I'm an idiot.
In any case, I really DID get a letter.. which prompted this post.
Just thought it'd be fun :)
Meanwhile, my bank account is not overdrafted, my personal info is safe, and I live in a house. Not an apartment.
Maybe one day you'll be lucky enough to step inside. :)

I believe that Wiki is simply covering up the fact that her bank account is now closed, she's over-drafted by $2869, her personal information is now halfway to Nigeria, and she's about to get evicted from her apartment.

I'm pretty sure that nowadays, our Canadian lotteries have tax on them. The lotto comission raised the price to play (from 1$ to 2$) to cover the taxes and increase the payouts. There is definitely now a tax, but I'm not sure if the advertised prize is before or after that tax. But I'm incredibly doubtful that you actually sent someone a check for 2900$ for something you are not sure you entered or not. So I'll say shenanigans, or incredible gullibility. Keep us posted, though. I'd like to know what happens.

Things that give this away as shenanigans:
1) Nobody would pay tax on a good or service they had not already received, excluding income tax.
2) The photo is claimed to be of you, yet there is a clear copyright notice and URL in the bottom left corner.
3) Those notes have a redeemable value of $10,000 if they are real, and assuming each of those stacks is 100 notes that's $1mil per stack. In 3 x bunches of 5, 1 x bunch of 3, and one in each hand, that's $20mil. I find it very difficult to believe someone with $20mil in $10k notes in front of them just over a year ago is doing asking people on the internet what they'd do with $125,000.
4) If you had that $20mil, you wouldn't be getting "seriously freaked out" about $2900.
-----------------------
5) and if that's intended to be Canadian money, you really should have done your research considering how many Canadains would see this.

If I'm not offended by your joke, that negates your comment about me being touchy. Not to mention, you used a plural expression when you said "touchy little fuckerS". So is is Canadians you think are touchy? People who think your jokes are cliched? The general public?

You're the one who doesn't get it, you blind fucker. The plural was to indicate that I am touchy too. No one wanted you to be offended. If you weren't you would shut the fuck up. Possible Option A: Look, it's a cashier's check, so it has to have a bank routing number on it or no other bank will cash it. You can have your bank verify the funds before you actually cash/deposit the funds. If the draw account doesn't have the funds, it's a scam. You didn't take this simple precaution; you get taken.
More Likely Option B: Shananas.

Dude, you just got scammed. The same thing happened to me (only I didn't fall for it). I had an online ad for a room for rent and some one for Nigeria respond and sent two checks for 2000 bucks. After I cashed it, he said that he made a mistake and needed the money wired back to him. So I called the cops and gave them all the information I had. About a week later I got a bill from the bank charging me 40 bucks or something for depositing a bum check.
You are so fucking screwed.
Btw, I'll bet 100 bucks that the money will end up in Nigeria. I've seen the same style scam a few times now.

All I did was CASH the check.. they didn't enter it into the computer or anything.. it didn't go through my bank account.
I just check my account online.. everything is ok so far.
=================================
No you didn't just CASH a check. The bank temporarily cleared teh check based on your credit, and account balances. If you had $100 buckas and bounced checks all the time, you would have had to wait a few days for the check to clear.
As someone said earlier, the bank could come back at you for the 2900, because from their end you gave them a check and they gave you the money in good faith. The burden of proof that you DIDN'T defraud them is on you. They see it simply from a "I gave you 2900 bucks and you gave me a bum check" perspective.
Are you really so stupid to think that money falls out of the sky?
Wait a minute....
Am I really stupid enough to fall for shenanigans?

As long as you didn't give them your bank information, the worst case scenario is that you were suckered into money laundering. If that's the case, since they misrepresented themselves to you, you shouldn't need to worry.
Keep optimistic. You might be able to get one of them there monkey butlers with the payoff.

Sounds a bit fishy.
First, find any and all information about this lottery to see if it's legit. If you're still uncertain, hire a lawyer with the $2,900 to do it for you. If it turns out to be for real, take a week off of work, pack up the family, and personally go to Canada to make any transactions in person.
Hey, if it pans out, you could have a nice little chunk of change. If it's a sham, have the above mentioned lawyer sue them for damages to cover your legal, travel, and lost wage costs.

All I did was CASH the check.. they didn't enter it into the computer or anything.. it didn't go through my bank account.
I just check my account online.. everything is ok so far.

You're joking, right? If not, you cashed the check, and then you sent the money to Canada... now the cashier check bounces and you're left 2,900 negative in your bank account...
