6.00am
Woken up by the clump, clump of the seventeen year olds's excited footsteps as he runs around the house, eventually ending up in my room perfecting his stage dive onto my inert form.
6.10am
Get out of bed, grumbling to myself about whose bright idea it was to let the seventeen year old stay for the weekend, only to realise the time and promptly go back to sleep.
7.30am
That's better, I get out of bed to a shot of tequila and a bottle of beer - it's Friday morning and I don't have to be at work, instead I will be rocking out at the Big Day Out, the New Zealand music festival ot end all music festivals - the only one we have in fact!
I sit back on the couch with my flatmates as we talk about what bands we want to see (Muse, Tool), bands to avoid (My Chemical Romance, The Killers), where to meet up (Beer Tent), who wil be the designated drug smuggler (Me), and what time to (When the tequila runs out).
12.52pm
Stumbling out to the taxi van, dragging an inebriated friend behind me, to take us to the venue.
Short pit stop to let said inebriated friend vomit out the window.
1.20pm
We have arrived! We join the crowds of young and old, big and tall, some emo, so fags wearing Tool t'shirts, walking up the hill towards the main gates. The excitement reaces my stomach as I hear the faint sounds of Trivium playing in the distance.
Faster, we make our way up the hill pausing only to purchase party pills and laugh at the guy who is passed out on the side of the road and who has pissed his pants.
1.40pm
Deposit drunk friend with people we know and set off to the beer tent, bumping into the seventeen year old who had left before us and who had already lost all his friends, gotten stoned and taken some pill a random guy had given him.
We ended up losing him again on our way through the crowds, Jesus there's alot of people, but finally made it to the beer tent where we waited in line for nearly an hour to get some nice warm beer.
2.40pm - 4ish
Hazy, drunken singing and roaming around, large quantities of beer and bourbon consumed, vaguely remember moshing to local band Blindspott and taking off with the rest of someone else's joint.
4.30pm
Staggered into a crowd and start watching a band i have no idea who they are, later found out I was watching Kasabian, they were pretty meh.
5.00pm
Ashamed to find myself singing extremely loudly to the Jet song 'Look what you've done'
Make up for this by elbowing a little emo kid in the head.
Though Jet actually put on a pretty decent show, while thier songs were quite pop, they were easy to groove to, judging by the crowd around me.
6.30pm
As designated drug smuggler, I make my way up to the Boiler Room (a hot sweaty tent which features bands such as The Streets, Lily Allen and Crystal Method) to give my flatmate her bag of pills (the previous day we had sorted out our drugs and put in a selection of legal party pills, panadol and for the more hardcore Esctasy and Speed) I had already decided to keep it mellow and legal this year - there was no way i was ending up in the St John's Ambulance tent again. I downed the contents of my bag as Lupe Fiasco started playing, and while not my cup of tea I couldn't help my get into it, his energy of stage was amazing and made for a good show, in the end I found myself being that random white person bopping along and trying to sing the words to songs I clearly didn't know. I was drunk, I didn't care.
I left the Boiler Room, walking through the mist tent to get rid of other peoples sweat off my skin and set off for the main stages where if i had timed it right, The Killers should just be finishing and Muse starting.
7.50ish pm
Standing in the crowd at Muse, a sudden intense sweat covers my whole body, I start to jump up and down as the piano starts playing the beginnning chords for New Born. I feel so intensely happy that my favourite song is playing.
A wave whooshes into my body and I turn to my friend "Wow did you feel that?" At her puzzled look i realise that I have accidentally dosed myself with E.
Oooops
Well needless to say I enjoyed Muse, Hysteria was a high point, the lights were amazing but by the end of it, I was starting to feel overwhelmed by the crowds so made my way back up to the beer tent stands that faced the stages to collect myself before I went back into the pits for Tool.
Fuck Knows What Time It Is pm
I never make it back down to the pits for Tool, instead I stood on the stands watching the trippy images that came up on the screens, then Maynard enters and says 'Holy Fucking Shit' We never got to see him as he sang at the back of the stage out of view. The show was amazing, an absolute high point was when Maynard bought Serj from System of a Down out on stage to sing Sober, everyone in the stands went so completely nutjob the stands started swaying. They played alot of 10,000 days which not many people were as familar with, a friend who was in the front mosh pit said it was pretty mellow down there and that maybe it would have been better if they could've played longer than the alotted 40 minutes.
We ended up leaving Tool early to try and catch the Violent Femmes
They were'nt worth it.
12.00am
The festival was over and as my mates trudged thier exhausted bodies towards the train station, I danced on ahead trying to make friends with strangers and marvelling at what a great day it turned out to be.

Saw Tool right after Undertow. Maynard got sick after like 7 songs, still awesome though. Their old bass player was still with them, dressed like Riker(?) on Star Trek Next Gen.

tool. maynard. a perfect circle (mentioned in the reviews). NZ (ex-pat. in Europe here - nostalgia is easier the further away from "home" you get). saw APC in Wellington a while back - brilliant, best fucking concert ever. tool - here in europe a few years ago, not as good, but maynard stripped and showed us his beautiful tattoos.

undertow is the best album
and the voilent femmes kickass too....but id see tool over them anyday...but not perfect circle
"kiss off" is a great tune....so is "breakin up" and "blister in the sun"

System of a Down wasn't there, Serj was.
It's always amusing for me to read the same old 'they were good back in the day' type comments.

The pit was "mello" because Tool was the only real band there.

You'll probably react like a typical Tool hardcore fan and tell me that I don't get it because they sing you a dark berceuse of liberating truthful angst or some vague shit, but I've seen them twice live (APC twice too). They are awesome live performers and there first three albums were solid but face it, they are out of juice and overrated.

I hate to say it Caul, but you're right. I mean, dont get me wrong, Ive seen them on the 10,000 Days tour and its a pretty good live show, but I saw them twice in 2002 on the Lateralus tour and the 10,000 Days concerts dont even closely compare to that.
They did a brilliant thing before Undertow by signing with a lower level record company. That has allowed them to pretty much control EVERYTHING about them since the label is just happy to have them. But its a double edged sword because I bet they dont have anyone at the label who has the balls to tell them when they go wrong with a song or something...couldve helped them with a few songs on 10,000 Days.
I'd be amazed if they could even reach the brilliance of Aenima or Lateralus again because those two albums blow EVERYTHING out of the water.

Tool are fuckin' terrible.
They're shit and they just recycle riffs.
The band is as close to 'no talent' as you can get and it takes quite an effort to think of a band which is more overrated. The first which comes to mind is Nirvana, but its a strong tie.
In short, fuck Tool. Go have a circle jerk with your other friends about it.

i could care less about Adam Jones' ability to play guitar, which I admit is not the best...although I do love that pipebomb in the middle of Jambi.
As long as Tool has Danny Carey and MJK, they will be better than 98% of music available today
===
I don't care about his technical abilities. I care about his creative skills with his instrument.
The last two albums REPLICATE older riffs. Even Tom Delonge is less redundant. Particulary 10,000 Days which even recycles drum lines. Not to mention the pedestrian arrangement and undecided vocals.
Tool are excellent at one thing: marketing. With brilliant image managing they built a ridiculously hardcore fan base that will buy anything, like botched albums.

There are myriads of small bands who are more interesting.

tools are overrated now and they recycle their old riffs to the point where keenan has to make the most shitty melodies to make it sound different when they reallly just have a TERRIBLE guitarist.
if i was tool, i'd sue myself for plagiarism.

Somehow at about 6:30 pm, you stopped rambling and broke into paragraph form.
That's where you lost me.
Tool has lost their edge. Saw them for the fifth time this year, and Maynard has trouble with his higher range now. He can't get through Eulogy anymore.
In Flames lost both guitar players, and I'm not even sure if Killswitch is still touring Europe...
Music really sucks lately.
