Well, after almost five months, my little experiment is drawing to a close. What experiment, you might ask? The experiment, I shall inform you, was little more than an excuse to get away from my obnoxious private school and overbearing parents in the States by living as an exchange student in Salamanca, Spain. Sidenote: I find it rather ironic that, while my parents won't let me go to the university in Madison for one night to visit my somewhat-responsible friends, they let me galavant off to Spain and live the house of complete strangers. But that's neither here nor there.
Anyway, today I was walking with my host mom's mom, a deaf-and-dumb (half dumb, really, she can stil go ABLUBUBUBUBU when she wants to get my attention) Spanish woman of about 58 years of age with a small dark growth on the side of her nose (tangent: my four-year-old host sister once tried to get me to touch said lump, while praising its softness- I politely declined), miming the few things I could say in Spanish Sign, when I thought 'How many people have this exact experience?' Okay, in that particular moment, I wasn't to thrilled (the abuelita had my arm in a vicegrip and smelled a little funky)- but on the whole... this has been remarkable. Salamanca is an amazing city, and Spain is a ton of fun. If you're interested, here's some random information based on my experiences. If you made it this far and you're not, chill as well.

THE FOOD- Spanish food is good. Usually. There are some really delicious things that I've never seen in the US, like chorizo or jamón serano. But there are also really disgusting things that you might want to stay away from. Some examples: Pig's ear- at once crunchy and slimy with a definate triangular shape; jeta (pig's face)- crunchy with little hairs growing all over it and before it's cooked and cut up, you can really see the snout; and tripe, which is just... slimy. They also eat bull's balls and brains. Those I didn't try...
The hours of eating are also really different- lunch is between 2 and 2:30, dinner is usually between 8:30 and 10:30, sometimes later.
THE STYLE- Spnaish style is bizarre, especially when it comes to hair. Mullets, faux-hawks, and rattails are common in boys, while the girls have a penchant for wearing extensions and pinning their bangs back. Don't ask me. There's also some intense 80's revival going down, with leggings and leg warmers and yeah. They also really seem to like facial piercings.
THE CLUBS- Discotecas in Salamanca are open to either people over 16 or over 18, but no one really cares if you're well-dressed. I can barely see over the bars in most places and almost never get carded. Most of these places play shitty music- Spanish pop leaves quite a bit to be desired. Every once in a while, flamenco will play, and everyone will stop dancing to clap their hands in a bizarre, syncopated rhythm. It's kind of as though they're having seizures. Smile and nod. Oh, and in a lot of these places, it's perfectly acceptable to smoke a joint or five. Some have resident dealers- those are obviously good places to case out.
EL SEXO- Ladies, if you can stand a mullet and/or a metrosexual, you will surely find someone to your liking and will it will surely be reciprocal. Especially if you're blond. Chances are, you will get invited to 'ir a los servicios.' I really don't understand why, but they seem to like exchanging bodily fluids in bathrooms. Needless to say, the bathrooms are gross. Oh, you may want to carry toliet paper in your purse. Because the bathrooms don't usually have it.
Gentelmenz, a lot of Spanish girls are gorgeous. And the age of consent is 16, so chances are, if they're in a bar, they're legal (if that even concerns you). And they're used to the whole sex-in-bathrooms concept, if you're into that. More than that, though, I don't really know.

Right, those are the big ones. If you ever go to Salamanca, in Gran Via there is a club called Desperados. Shots are .50€. Take a tequila in my honor (oh- they take that with lemon) since I'm leaving on Saturday morning.

monster- i also learned to speak near-fluent spanish, and passed all of my nine classes in spanish public high school. i traveled some, went to both ancient pueblos like monteleon and tourist traps like valencia. i made friends and had an amazing relationship with my host family. but hey. no creo que nadie quiera oirme describir las cosas más importantes.
