A convenient day was come, and before
Antipas the woman began to dance,
Fluid and maddening, as drawn water,
Severe and inspiring, as open flame,
Moving as a woman should move in time
Blanketed in the slow beat of a drum,
Shrouded by singing silver's simple ring
She floats, stirs the air and lives in echoes,
Backlit the shadows fall upon the face
Of the crowned king, black handprints on his eyes
Beckoning, midnight fingers, moving hips
Moving in time for the woman of fire,
The woman of drawn water
Dancing in smoke.

Inbreathed a drug, doubled pulse precise
With the hammer and the heavy hand
Moving over something once an animal,
Now tamed and stretched, as she stretches
Untamed, barefoot and her hair a bloody mess
Of red tangles, now blonde in the caught sunlight,
Now black in the hungry shade, elemental,
Slithering through the eyes, infectous,
Drawn into the lungs and around the heart
All too quickly, all too simple the
Seduction, the untrained seduction,
The movement of the woman and the
Taking of a man, a soul possessed, stunned,
Made simple by a convenient day and
Drumbeat, Oriental, exotic, the arching
Eyes and the serpentine shake,
Waterfall fingers and the backs of her knees,
Free breasts moving heavy below the robe
As full lips whisper out a name.
A man could lose himself to such a thing,
Men would die for less,
Men have died for less.

I will give you anything
I will offer you the world if you but ask for it.

There is screaming beyond the beat,
I beg you play louder,
Blood remains on the silver and steel,
But cannot stain the music.

Play on.

Bubs, you cannot appreciate or understand the restraint it took to not make the 'baroque/fix it' joke immediately upon posting this. I consider it a personal triumph of sorts.

It's a goodly line though. I'm glad someone mentioned it.

Well if it was good enough for the Baroque period, it's good enough for the modern era.
No sense in people putting on airs for no good reason.

However, I am a fair and understanding man.

It's baroque? Why, did you bareak it?

It's 14 degrees here. WTF.

I meant Herod Antipas in the title, not Herod the Great.
And yes, "before" was intended to mean "in front of," not "occuring years prior to."

But everyone makes their own interpretation. This is a beautiful thing.

I figured if there was a question at all about the title it'd be "why is Herod named in the title at all?"

Yes! I got the usual call ~ not like I was drunk or anything last nite, but i let someone else have it for the nite since I wasn't using it, and left with others. Only thing is they're in Pensacola, and I'm too lazy to call anybody to take me to it this late. For here {Dauphin Island, Alabama} it's FREEZING, like 52 degrees. I can't go out in that. That may sound like joke but I can't take cold. I'm a wuss. But only when it comes to cold.

But more importantly, Wisher, did you find your car?

The wind chill factor is going to be 8 degrees F here tomorrow.

Re-reading, I see your point, Sac. It's floating there like The Baptist's head, just out of reach.

I interpreted it as he meant/or should have used Salome, but confused the names. Who cares, really? I can't remember where I left my car last nite. ha

"and before (linebreak) Antipas the woman began to dance"

-As in "for" or "in front of" Antipas, is how I interpreted it.

Antipas the woman began to dance

***

Ahmm, Antipas was *son* of Herod.

Perchance I should re-read?

(I hate you for observing it without me. Or before me. Whatever. Was it nice? What's its natural size?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember it being huge. Har har. And of course, very nice. One of my favorites.

I am trying to get tickets to the Monet exhibit now, but I waited too long. Bastards.

http://www.ncartmuseum.org/collections/highlights/european/italian/1600-1815/gandolfibehead_lrg.shtml I've always liked this one, since I was a child.

I'm sure it was too big for you to handle. Monstrous really. And firm.

I must credit you with making me look into this Gandolfi fellow. He's managed to escape me until now, it seems. Great painting. Nice gesture to the viewers, to hush them.

The motion in this one always gets me, and I don't know why:

I only had time to give this a quick read and I so wish I could read it again right now, but I'll rate instead.

This piece is just gorgeous- as is the painting. Your imagery is as seductive as the colors in the piece. LOVE this.

I love the way he dulled down every source of lighting so that when he used the most white on the figure, she would have a glowing look.

Artists used to be amazing with lighting. I don't know what happened.

---

I had a difficult time picking one of Moreau's "Salome"s to use here.
I'll probably link the rest at some point. She's ice perpetual in all of them, though. Radiant and frozen.

I don't know what happened to artists either. Somewhere along the line they lost their way.
