This isn't going to be entertaining, just you know. Those who would -2 me for that alone are not my intended audience. This is a post of gratitude. Primarily to those who make the effort to be civil, give good input, and make themselves a pleasant member of the community.

Now I am NOT on a high horse. I have gotten as stupid on this site as anyone, as I am far from perfect. You don't need to be perfect to feel genuine gratitude however. I have put a lot of effort into some of my posts. A recent post of mine started off well-intentioned enough. I cut it short when the inspiration was choked out by thoughts of the scum of ubersite, and I was going to ditch it. I kept it, and I'm glad I did, even if out of all the reviews only a handful were genuine, well-intentioned, or insightful.

My thanks goes out to you people. There are some on ubersite who are little more than pests. I'd rather put up with the scum bags than to leave the oppurtunity to have my creative musings combed over by a stranger who will give me an honest opinion. I'll ignore 20 hate filled responses to get Rob_Berg's reflection on my work. I've had several replies in the past that opened my eyes in a whole new way, as communication was intended. St. Jimmy recently brought up a point that I completely missed that had a significant impact on my writing. I might revisit the topic again someday with valuable new insight from other true uberites.

If you not an uberite, you're a parasite. Parasites drag down uber, create flame wars, and turn things into second grade "who can out-talk who" contest. Parasites scare away shy, nervous people. Nurturing environments can produce impressive people. In a perfect world, Ubersite could be like a training ground for the worlds greatest authors. I have seen some extraordinary talent on this site.

Imagine if these people were helped and encouraged by all other uberites. A supportive group could help everybody finish their own novels. There are several people that post on this site that if I found out they published a novel, I would go out and buy it. Some of the humor on here (most of it is just wrong - even if it is funny) has made me laugh until my sides hurt. There are some writing genius's creeping around this site, and I commend them for hanging around. I think there are some emotional masochists roaming this site too, getting their rocks off by the stinging tongues of the review hyenas.

I can't believe some of the insults I've seen on here. There are some who specialize even in those. I have gotten burned so many times on this site. Schlongy might say he was toughening me up to be a better writer, but in my humble opinion, I think he pushes a bit hard. But that's me, and that's him. He's free to do what he wants, and maybe it does help sometimes. I commend his dedication this site, as he is a very active member of the ubercommuity, and I know he deserves the attention he gets because of that. But I still think he's an ass.

People are so hard on "nUbs", despite the fact that none of the mocking party was born knowing the customs of this virtual community. I further congratulate those who support noobs. If you know it's there first post, and you +2 it just to encourage them, that's awesome of you. It's easy to kick a man while he's down, a bit harder to kick a man when he's not, but only a real man can help another man up.

So this post goes out to all the true Uberites out there. Your contributions to this site do not go unnoticed, and likely help when you don't even know it. Thank you guys. Thank you everyone who has read any of my posts, and thank you everyone who has taken the time to review them.

-ooQueso

Auto "referencing me in your post" +2

I have to agree, uber can be a fairly caustic environment at first. You're right, that sort of thing may scare off nervous people from posting more than once or twice. But then again, you really would have to expect this. The internet is a pretty anonymous place to start, and uber is even more so since you don't need to submit any personal info for an account. People can and usually do get pretty nasty in such impersonal communications.

Would uber be "better" if everyone were nice? I don't know, but I don't think so. First of all, everything on the front page would be a 1.5 or higher and we all know everthing submitted isn't that good. Also, the whole point of uber, as I see it, is free expression. If everyone had to censor themselves to be nice, well then uber wouldn't be that much different than real life. By being anonymous, we can truly express ourselves any way we'd like, whether that be giving well thought out comments or -2DIE STFU NOOB!!11! LOLRZ UR MOM SUCKS COCKS IN HELL!11!!1!1

On a related side, I've read more than a few times that "I know so and so and his/her uber-persona is just an act. He/she is completely different in real life." I very much doubt this statement. I think who/what you are on uber is a much more accurate reflection of who you truly are. In real life, you have to maintain appearances and put up an acceptable front for those around you. Here, since you'll never meet any of these people in real life, so you can say whatever you'd like. Nice, mean, tolerant, racist, none of these statements will ever come back to "haunt" you because they're linked to an internet name, not to you personally.

This comment was entirely too long. Back to the original point, I think really sensitive types just end up going to pulsehead.

You post here is well-intended, but I have to disagree with you.

The Darwinian aspect of Ubersite is necessary. There are just too many idiots out there, and I doubt bart or anyone else is going to create a training program to teach people how to Uber properly.

Trial by fire can seem a bit harsh, but like I always say:
READ
LEARN
EVOLVE

There are a few n00bs out there who have been smart, and instead of posting junk on their first day, have hung around and seen how things work around here first. I waiting six weeks before making my first post, and I still sucked for a while.

Encourage people in your own ways, but remember, sometimes they need to be discouraged as well.

everyone with a working account is a 'true uberite'

the site is what it is. to presume to say who is a contributor and who isn't is pompous and stupid.

~~~
Well call me pompous and stupid, but you think Maltese actually contributes?
~~~

As much as I don't want to say it, yes he does. You cannot deny that he is a part of the dynamic of the site. What he contributes impacts other pieces of the Ubersite puzzle. What he contributes just happens to be universally loathed.

Urbanes vagina being posted was a part of the dynamic of the site.

UberMadness is a part of the dynamic of the site.

Goatse, Bickerstaff, Tubgirl, Ubercons, cliques, the fucking rabbit, good fiction, cartoon penii...all just pieces of the whole.

Here's the deal, you can disagree with something, dislike it and how it afffects the whole, but denying it as part of the whole is foolish.

I think George Bush is an asshole who hasn't made a single correct move in his entire time in office, but he is certainly a part of the US.

Ubersite is a big beautiful circus. Everything here is what it is. New things will come and alter the landscape, old things will disappear.

I'll reserve calling you pompous and stupid for another day. haha

That's all.

Nurturing environments can produce impressive people, sure. But hacking and slicing your way through the muck and mire for respectability, and cutting your teeth but good to get your name out there and hone your skils are also ways to go. Some people like to be coddled, some people like to be challenged. This place is as much a society as it is a writing forum, after all.

Welcome to the Savage Land.

i guess if it helps you feel more secure to try and compartmentalize everything, have everything marked up nicely and placed in its box so you can understand it and deal with it, then more power to you.
