My landlords' daughter has confided in me that she is in a sexual relationship with a 40 year old man who lives in the apartment complex that we live in.
My first reaction was that she was being taken advantage of as she is only 15 yrs old. I know the man she speaks of, not well but we have talked quit a few times in the last year or so. As she explained it further my jaw dropped and I was completely taken aback by her situation. She was asking advice on how to keep him involved with her as he is becoming very scared and fearful of being discovered. As I asked her questions trying to figure out her situation, how it got started, etc. I discovered she had instigated the whole thing and had relentlessly pursued this man since she was 14. Not in a stalker type of way but in the normal flirty way. He is by far not her first sexual experience and she prefers men way out of her age range (her words not mine) she says she has had sex with boys her age and found them shy and not very skilled.
When I asked why she came to me she merely shrugged her shoulders as if to have no real answer.
I never gave her an answer except to say I wasn't sure of anything after hearing her story.
What the hell according to California law he is in violation of the law regarding age of consent. Yet it is not rape, nor cohersed, well maybe he was cohersed by her to a certain extent. Still he is a 40 yr old man and should have enough self control and experience to resist that kind of situation.
The whole thing just made me confused by everything I had been taught. Mainly that girls are girls and not mature enough to be doing what she is doing. What bothered me worse was (I think she saw this in me) and told me that some of her friends are far more adventurous then her.
I thought maybe she was fucking with me after a couple of days until I saw her leave his apartment a few days later at 4:30 in the morning as I was going to work. She saw me as she crossed the parking lot to her place and waved hi.
Ethically where does all of this go, the law is clear but the law was designed to protect the innocent and she clearly is not innocent in this situation.

I told her father. He never showed any sign of being an extreme guy religious or otherwise so I hope he is levelheaded.
She told me about it, why, I have no idea but at least it is in the open.
He took it pretty well... said nothing to me and just closed the door.
If anything else happens I will inform the curious here in uber world.

Dude, if I were you i'd tell both of them they need to cut the shit. You also might want to tell her dad, because if someone else goes to the cops before you. And they find out you knew about it, you'll go down for aiding an abeding. Also did it occur to you that perhaps the girl telling you was a cry for help. Maybe she knows what she's doing is wrong but because of her fathers obivious lack of parenting skills she can't stop doing the wrong thing. This kid has problems, and so do her friends, you might wanna try calling social services and get these girls some help. Theres no reason for girls that young to be doing shit like that.

the idea of innocence in youth is a modern construct that only exists in Western -or Westernized- societies. i don't have the articles here(at work), but i can share them later. young people are a lot more resilient and intelligent than they're given credit for.
