As everyone who keeps up to date on my life knows, I totaled my truck two weekends ago, and being as such, I'm currently in the market for a new car.

I'm a "car guy." I like cars and I like trucks. I hate automatic transmissions. I have a passion for that third pedal.

I wasn't planning on buying a car now. The plan was to pay off the truck, drive it into the ground, and when I get a garage get a G35 coupe as a second car. However, plans change. I have to buy a car by Saturday, when my Mom, who's car I'm currently driving, gets back from out of town.

I think I've narrowed it down to two choices. So uber, which car should I buy?

you dont wantthat fj, its like a hummer with extra blindspots.... its a fad car, like the pt cruiser

if you are gonan be doing a ton of driving and want a 5-6 speed, i would suggest a good vw or audi used ones at 2 years old or so with under 50k on them go for less than what your looking for.

a subaru would be my second choice

both vw/audi and subaru are run between 200-300hp and still can get about 25-35mpg and they come in AWD standard for most models

I defy you to give one practical reason for having a manual transmission. If you like it, great, but there is no valid reason to have them anymore. And don't spout the "better gas mileage" rant. That might have been true in 1970, but it's gone the way of the dinosaurs.

---------------------------

I really don't understand the obsession people have with automatics. A manual/stick shift will give you far more control unless you are entering into Aston Martin territory, which if you can afford, you just pay someone to drive you around. The only reason to have an auto is if you spend all your time driving in a city like London, UK.

Try powering out of a slide in an Automatic and watch it select the wrong gear.

Of the 2 vehicles suggested, I would choose neither. I think the Toyota is seriously awful looking and the Nissan looks bland.

I got to agree with the BMW comments. Much as I tend to hate the people who drive them, they are without doubt the best cars I have ever driven. I would go with a 5 series over the 3, even though they don't quite have the same performance, again unless you go top end.

If you favour the larger/SUV option, look into the used Range Rover availabilty. You can pick up a used model 03/04 for £30k ish, so I would guess that you will get about the same in $$.

Glad you are still alive and good luck.

i think i'm gonna go drive a used bmw tomorrow. i can get a 05 325xi for well under 30, or a 03 535xi for right around 30. that'll probablyg ive the maxima a run for its money. leaning away from the FJ.

___________________________

I completely recommend the 3 series if you like zipping around. Especially with getting an xi, because it sucks having to worry about shitty conditions. If you wanted a ridiculously incredible car, I'd say the 330xi, but I don't know what they go for. Of course, the 325 would get better mileage. Either way, the tail lights on the e90 are a little strange, but imo they look pretty nice if you get one of bmw's grey tones.

The 535xi is probably the way to go if you want more room and a slightly more cumbersome car.

Actually, forget all that. Just go in debt and pick up the new 335i. You might never have money again, but wouldn't it be worth it? Wait, scratch that... Now that we're on the subject of going in debt, just wait for the e92 m3 to come out... Oh god, the thought of that car makes me weep.

Hyundai Elantra.

I got a 2005 when it was released. 11500 miles in the last 2 years and I fill the tank about once every two weeks.

----------------

Oh boy. I've got a 2005 Accent. When I bought it, it had SIX kilometers on it.

Sort of a farty little car.. it's a hatchback, but they call it a '5-door' to pretend that it's not SO loser-y. Before that, I had a 1992 Sonata.

But yes... incredibly good mileage.

Let's think practically.

You drive 50 miles to work (*2 to get back)(*5 days a week) = 500 miles/week (*50 weeks/year)=25,000 miles/year. Add an extra 5,000 miles for weekend travel, so that totals 30,000 miles/year.

Assume that the F-ing Jay Cruiser gets 15 miles per gallon = 2,000 gallons of gas/year * $2.50/gallon (because all Jap cars require premium gas)= $5,000/year for fuel. Add a set of tires in to the mix per year ($1,000), a set of brakes per year and other silly maintenance ($500), and a monthly payment of $400(*12 months = $4,800)

You're looking at a vehicle that will cost you $11,300 per year to own, minus insurance costs.

I recommend that you get a disposable 5 speed 4 banger like a Focus, an HHR, or a Jeep Compass.
-----------

For the love of God don't get a Focus.

And reading the comment about the Mazda6, you may want to consider looking at a Mazdaspeed6, which is essentially a family sedan on steroids (+AWD).
-----------------

Another acceptable suggestion. Ironically enough I came back to post the same thing after seeing a Mazda commercial. Totally spaced it out.

Get a F250 PowerStroke Diesel 4 door. Will handle snow, is safe as a tank and gets 20 miles to the gallon.

I'd take a Toyota over a Nissan any day, however, that is one ugly fucking car.

Get a four wheel/all wheel drive car. I'm pretty sure there is a Lexus or two in your price range which are quite sporty and AWD. I'm not sure about Toyotas, though.

For $30k you can get a pretty fuckin loaded car.

Ever considered a BMW? You could get a new 3 series or a 'certified preowned' 3 or 5 series bmw for that price. I'd once again reccomend all wheel drive models, which are the (XI)

50 miles is roundtrip to work. they reccommend premium gas, but it's only a 10;1 compression ratio, so you can get away with cheap gas with no banging.

Because an intelligent driver can make a better decision as to when you should shift than an automatic transmission.

That has been the case until recently, since now they have automatic transmissions that are so intelligent and have so many options that the only real reason for a manual is for the fun of it.

But in any case, you still have reason to buy a stick unless you're getting an M6 or something, because only the cars that cost over 100 grand have a good enough automatic transmission to have no reason not to use one.

*with proper use of engine braking your brake pads will last longer.

*better control in the snow. ie you can start in 2nd gear to get traction, you can downshift to slow down instead of hitting the brake.

*chicks dig guys who drive stick.

*to differentiate yourself from the countless herds of d-bags who drive automatics

*it's fun. when you nail a shift into second it just feels good. puts a smile on your face when you would otherwise be frowning.

*i like it. great.

and i know you *can* downshift in an automatic, but lets face it - nobody does. in a stick, you do.

I vote neither, but I like the Mazda6. It's really sporty and I've read good things about it. If you can't have the G, I vote Mazda6.

what do you know... Mazda6 iswhat I drive.

out of those two, I'd get the Nissan. However neither of those would have been on my list to start with.

AND...stop fucking boasting about how cheap shit is on the US. We'd pay the prices that you quote BUT IN POUNDS!!!

Sigh

If you were a *real* car guy and willing to pay that kind of money you would be considering a WRX STi. Not only does it have the six speed you seem to be desiring, it also has AWD for the snow days and also infinitely more fun than the bloated SUV or the torque-steer happy Maxima.

i know of the sti. i've driven it twice. great car to drive. however, one thing stands in my way: the looks.

bottom line: it looks like shit.

i dont' want a car that looks like it is from 1980. the looks have to inspire emotion just as much as the performance.

If you had a truck and actually ever used it I recommend buying another truck. I did the same thing to my Dodge about 6 years ago and I made out even better than you with the insurance kick back. I bought a Bronco and then set it up to exactly how I want it. The only problem was the lack of bed. I ride off road motorcycles dirtbikes etc and in my state trailers are taxed. I found myself buying a truck within a year. I can't get rid of the Bronco due to my emotional attachment.

My recommendation......if you used your truck, buy another one.

If you can afford it buy anything european as your president told you last week to cut fuel consumption. Most of them are very safe and come in 6-speed. Consider diesel when you're mostly on the highway or a smart.... g'luck and drive safe.

I'd go for the Toyota. I drive a Nissan Xterra 5-speed, its pretty fun to drive and they're not expensive. So you might wanna thing about that one.

Go fer the Toyota. Although if you're third option was the Mercedes-Benz Pope-Mobile, I'd say go for that.

The FJ TRD SE is a limited edition, they only made 3200 of them, ever. So it might retain it's value better than most toyotas over the long hall.
