Yeah, yeah, I said I wasn't going to post again. Shoot me. I lied.
Long...eh, whatever.
In 1990 I turned thirteen years old. That was the year that I finished 8th grade. Our middle school had an 8th grade graduation party and dance. I didn't go. I had gotten horrible marks that year but my tutors talked to the right people and they passed me anyway. That was the year I barely finished the 8th grade. I juuust squeaked by. That was the year I finished middle school in a hospital on pain medication while trying to learn Algebra 2.
January 4th 1990 my Nana and I went to Newington Children's Hospital for a routine visit to check my leg. I was growing rapidly and needed to be fitted for a new prosthesis. This was an every six months ordeal for me because my body was continuously growing and so was my leg. This was nothing new and every six months or so I needed to be fit for a new limb. During this particular visit with gram, X-rays and blood samples were taken. I thought nothing of this because nurses were always coming and going checking in on me. Whether sticking me with needles while taking my blood or lying me down on some cold hard table while taking X-rays. This was the norm for me and it didn't bother me because it was all I knew. I grew up in a children's hospital and once again I needed to be admitted for surgery.
My first operation took place when I was three years old and I had to be hospitalized about every year after that.
I wasn't what most would regard as the stereotypical thirteen-year old. There were no sleepovers for me or trips to the mall. I couldn't go to birthday parties or to the movies with friends. And while all the other girls were flirting and dancing with cute boys in the school gym, experiencing their first kiss while listening to 'Open Arms' by Journey, I had been confined to a hospital bed in a body cast. I couldn't go to the seasonal dance that year. Around my thirteenth birthday the doctors told me I needed emergency surgery on my leg and my thirteenth birthday on January 10th was celebrated in a hospital bed with my grandparents, my sister, my mom and my dad by my side.
In April, that same year I was re-admitted for another procedure on my leg. Once again I was surrounded by close friends and family. Once again I was out of school with tutors teaching me while in a hospital bed dozing in and out while on pain medication.
A week later I left the hospital and went home but by June after I was healed I needed another surgery. I passed 8th grade, in the hospital on a wing and prayer thanks to my tutors. I know I shouldn't have graduated from 8th grade and I'm sure I passed because the tutors felt bad about my situation. Still, even though I went through tough times at a young age and had painful surgeries, I'm glad I finished 8th grade in the hospital. In the hospital it was ok that I was in a wheelchair. It was ok that I couldn't walk around. I wasn't made fun of like I was in school and despite the pain medication that sometimes would make me drowsy I could pay attention while learning my studies with the tutor. No one called me names and no one threw things at me. In the hospital, I fit in.
By the end of June in 1994 everything changed and I was having the time of my life with all my summer friends on Block Island. Life was different on the islnd. I was away from the people in my home town and was enjoying my summer. No stress and no worries. I wasn't able to walk, but my family bought me one of those electric 'Lark' scooter wheelchairs. I would go all over the island on that buggy. That scooter brought me to parties on Scotch Beach where I would drink cheap beer from a keg and then attempt to drive myself back to my boat. Sometimes I made it to the boat. Sometime I drove off the road and ate honeysuckle bushes. They sure are sweet. Sometimes I would just watch late night drunks walk home. And, if I was lucky sometimes older year round islanders that I knew would pick me up (literally) and put me in their trucks. My scooter chair in the back they would drive me back to Payne's Dock where I lived during the summer on my parents boat. All was good, but there were also times when weekend warriors who would visit the island on weekends would pull off to the side of the road, talk to me and solicit rides on my hot rod. This was the case when I met Steve.
It happened one night after a party, I was driving my whip from the beach when a white mini-van pulled off to the side of the road in front of me. The guys in the van were cool for the most part but really sloppy and drunk. One of the passengers in the mini-van, Intoxicated Puke on Shirt Guy (IPOSG) jumped out of the van and wanted to ride on the back of my electric mode of transport and wouldn't take no for an answer. My vehicles back wheels wouldn't spin and my ride wouldn't move while he was standing on the back. I told him we weren't going to go very far, not to puke on me and to ride with his friends. IPOSG told me to 'hit the pavement and walk home.' He wanted shrimp!
Intoxicated Puke on Shirt Guy didn't realize that I was without leg and couldn't walk, anywhere. IPOSG man started to get pushy with me and just like that, Steven showed up on the scene in his busted up, rusty pick-up truck. This was the first time I met Steve. He was a year round islander. I had seen him before on the island buy had never met him. He recognized me from my hot ride and from scoot-scooting all around the island. He came to my rescue. Steven could see that I was in a conundrum so he told Intoxicated Puke on Shirt Guy to beat it. IPOSG wanted no trouble with the locals and he got back into the mini-van and they all drove away. I was safe.
Steve walked with me that night while I rode my scooter all the way back to my boat at Payne's Dock. He did this most nights that we ran into each other just to make sure I got home safely. The two of us became really good friends that summer and we spent a lot of time hanging out. Whether we read grave stones in the cemetery or smoked shitty pot in his Brat listening to Twisted Sister. Steve and I became summer pals.
I would see Steve only during the summer months and our friendship would pick up just where it left off the previous summer; telling jokes and goofing off. Then one summer as after few years past I introduced him to a friend I once had from home. She came out to the island, they met, dated and they got married a few years later. I lost touch with Steve and he moved off island. I never saw him again on Block. Too young and naïve their relationship failed and unfortunately it ended in divorce.
Steve and I ran into each other back in August of 06. He and his wife divorced. Too young and too naïve their relationship that started 14 years ago unfortunately ended. Our relationship picked up exactly where it left off. Telling jokes and being goofs but this time, we fell in love with each other.
When I think back to the days on my scooter and the days when I couldn't walk, Steve would walk me back to my boat. He had nothing to gain by so that and wasn't out to get some ass. He was just being a nice guy. He was being Steve and I never thought after all these years we would end up together. I never liked him in that way. He was my friend. My friend and I are getting married in May. I love Block Island.
