My hubby is an ER doc and almost daily I anxiously await the tales of the crazies that he treats. Some of them are just random stuff - idiots looking for pain pills, dumb kids overdosing on cough medicine, etc.
Tonight, however, I was told quite the story.
A middle aged (45ish) fat man, at least 400 lbs, came in to the ER complaining of shoulder pain. The usual tests were preformed - x-rays, blood work, blood pressure. The tests revealed an infection in his shoulder that was not terribly serious, however required admission to the hospital for IV antibiotics. Probably an unnecessary admission, but better to admit than get sued.
So when the fattie is being told that he is going to be admitted for a day or two, he breaks down into tears. Sobbing, gasping for breath, gut wrenching tears. The whole ER staff quickly becomes extremely attentive to the patient trying to figure out what is the problem. Before the wailing began, he stated that he had been at his mothers for the past month caring for her. She had apparently been extremely ill as well. Everyone was wondering did she just pass away, what could have happened in his last hospital visit that was soo terrible to result in this sort of display.
Everyone tried to talk to him, to console the fat bastard who was taking up two ER beds, and what seemed to be an eternity (at least 15 min) of violent crying, wailing, sobbing, and flailing around he finally began to speak. It took several minutes for the fat to finally settle and for him to regain control of his body. His breathing became rhythmic and subdued.
The whole room was waiting in intense anticipation of what could be wrong. But what he said not one person had a response to.
"Doc, every night for the past month, my mom has been slipping me orange juice and everclear and been giving me head. Doc, you know I didn't know what she was doing then she would just start sucking on it and I could not stop her cause she seemed to be having such a good time."
The silence in the room was deafening. Not one person had a response - what do you say to that and still remain professional. Within a moment or two the crying started again and did not stop until he left the ER. The nurses on the floor gave him meds to make him stop crying. After he left, everyone kept talking about him, was he serious, was he crazy (obviously), where is the mom, and one question that they are taking bets on is:
Was he crying because of the shame that he felt in admitting that -

And, FYI Buttface, this story doesn't exposed any personal details about who this person was (Texas is pretty big place and I'm sure there is more than one "mama's boy").

I wasn't referring to HIPAA, I was referring to the Hippocratic oath, which states "All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal."
