Alexander Fraser Tytler is known for the attributed quote:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From Bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.

The quote sounds pretty cool.... except I can't think of any real life examples..

Does he give any examples? Do you know of any? Do you show both your own ignorance of history and gullibility by accepting this quote as is, before even debating the quote itself?

Any intellectual should first look into the suspicions that arise from any claims. It shows that you obviously did not.

You want intellectual discussion? Let's see.. In modern times, the first democratic movements were the US and the French Revolution. These are the two closest to being "200 years" away. France did not follow the sequence. US may, but this quote apparently has seen previous observations of the sequence?

The last time the world had democracies was pretty much back when it first had them, when Alexander the Great conquered them. They were Athens and some societies in India. I really doubt this quoter had any indepth insights at the economic activity or public feelings of any of the Indian democracies. Furthermore, Athens was a direct democracy; it had no candidates to vote for.

Lastly, I make some web searches to see if anyone shares my suspicions.... http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/tyler.asp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Fraser_Tytler

And they do... Just because you're liberal, it doesn't automatically mean you're immune to any propaganda.

IT'S SO TRUE BECAUSE IT'S LYRICS FROM ROCK BANDS!

That's Caul for ya... Missing the forest for the trees.

I was merely elaborating on my position my couching it in terms of rock lyrics. That doesn't mean I take my cues from rock bands. Nice try though. As usual, you have succceeded in diverting the focus of the debate in a completely pointless direction.

Hey ETS,

Isn't it funny how now that federal power is shifting to the opposite party, how they now are all doing 180's and banging the fear drum?

-------------

It's not funny, dude... It's PREDICTABLE.

I knew full well what would happen, which is why I've been calling for everyone to try and vote for the guy you've never heard of...the one in the 3rd party whenever possible.

But, my own instinct still tells me it doesn't matter a fucking bit. The elections are hopelessly rigged at this point and our government's blatant departure from the will of the American people is a testament to that. They know they can control things now to such an extent that voices of real opposition will be completely blacklisted from mainstream coverage. They will go to whatever wars they damn well please be it Clinton's excursion into the Balkans or Bush's excursion into the Middle East... The only difference has been in the area of damage control and public perception. But still the results are the same. They do what they want when they want and if the people aren't behind it, they will CREATE the climate in which the people will have little choice but get behind it.

It really is about time for a revolution, I'm afraid. And I know full well that from a certain perspective that just makes me sound like some kind of rebel without a cause, angst-ridden punk, or extreme right wing 2nd Amendment patriot, but I don't care. It is the truth and I will continue to speak it until they cart me off to Guantanamo or whatever other concentration camp they create in my backyard. Define me as thou wilt.

I've seen this on Ubersite in the past 3 years no less than 10 times. It's usually followed up with some pesudo-intellectual lefty horseshit pasted right off of moveon.org that boils down to "OMG!! GEORGE BUSH IS BAD!!1!1!!!"

It's really disgusting that the media can convince people into believing this. I guess that after six years of hearing it every day on the news, that it must be true. TV DOESN'T LIE! YOU LOVE TV!

Homer made a good analogy below.

---

bah - Why does the media have to convince people into believing this?

Seems like a perfectly logical observation to me - I disagree with some of it, but I certainly don't see the need for you to become so reactionary Bob.

Strange, that even though this has nothing to do with 'lefty horseshit' - you felt compelled to bring it up. On a side note, I would LOVE to know what particular elements followed the previous iterations that you define as 'lefty' are so filled with horseshit that you immediately marginalize and dismiss them.

The TV is fucking evil... but it serves up some glorious distractions.

But Bob, why do you STILL try and boil this down to issues of 'left' and 'right'? They are clearly bullshit diversions...so why do you still subscribe to it?

Of course, I agree we shoudn't take ANYTHING the media tells us as gospel without first looking at all the evidence first. This should be a given at this point. But even if you don't subscribe to this cyclic theory of democracies as put forth in this post, you surely cannot argue that he legislation that has passed our houses of congress and the president's desk since 9/11 have brought us dangerously close to totalitarian-style control?

I think you all know where I stand on this question. Judging from the reviews to posts such as this, more and more people besides myself are seeing it too.

America is slowly turning into a police state. It is being run by people who are using it as an engine for world domination and the plundering of natural resources in far-flung lands. And any opposition or voice of reason here at home will be thoroughy ridiculed in the mainstream CIA-run media.

As Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler knew...if you repeat a lie often enough, people will begin to believe it, and the bigger the lie, the faster it takes hold on the population.

Keeping us scared is the objective. They are counting on us accepting these increasingly obtrusive and senseless 'security' measures in an effort to acclimate us to being controlled. They want us to think such things are 'normal' or in our own best interests. They are counting on human nature to do the work for them by providing all the trappings of bread and circus and making speaking out in opposition too painful a prospect to undergo.

On the other hand, *I* have faith in the essential freedom and resilience of the human spirit. I have faith that increasing numbers of people will wake up, to draw a parallel, like Neo in the Matix, to the unsettling reality with which we are presented. And finally, I have faith in the courage of mankind to fight against those forces which seek to enslave him like a thing possessed with the will of God.

As for my answer, I think we are in the transitional stage of complacency to apathy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I enjoyed this post. I think the answers alone will provide insight as to "what stage" America is truly in.

Personally, I believe we're (I'm Canadian) more in the "Apathy to Dependence" area, and it's applicable to more than just America. We are a species bred on mass consumption, and in the face of potential environmental disaster, nuclear holocaust, and the potential end of mankind, are unable to change our habits to address these issues.

Complacency to Apathy was pre-Bush/International terrorist threats/war on the East.

Now that we've started realizing how fucked up, gluttonous, and unresourceful we are - it has become painfully apparent the methods we believe sustained our existence are actually contributing to our decline.

If you do not care, then why the holy fuck did you click on the link? Don't tell me to shut up. If you don't care, fine. I don't give a fuck. Go play X-Box or stick a dildo up your ass. I found this quote, thought it was applicable to America and posted it. In closing, blow me.

As for my answer, I think we are in the transitional stage of complacency to apathy.

You're not going to get anywhere with that kind of attitude here. Except for a handful of cool people most people here are complete and utter retards. Low brow humor is appreciated and good original fiction is sometimes appreciated.

They will +2 tubgirl and -2 anything that resembles an intelligent thought with few exceptions.

You won't get much love here but I fear your sentiment is accurate. We are nearing the end of that cycle I would guess and that nicely explains the rise of scumbags like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, etc.

I have my own little analogy for democrats, liberals and all the horseshit that is allowed to fly in government:

If you propose to rob Peter to pay Paul, you can always count on the assistance of Paul.

If Paul represents under-achievers, Peter represents over-achievers and [insert random liberal fuck] as the proposer you have a perfect analogy for America right now.

The average person is dumb, unsophisticated, complacement and of limited vision and ambition. There are always going to be more of those kind of people than anything else. Average, mediocre - also the majority - that's how it works. In a democracy those people have all the power - if they only band together and all agree with each other the rest of us are in big trouble. I think the the only reason we haven't collapsed into total chaos yet is because these idiots squabble back and forth and argue about nothing electing total jackasses on both sides of the fence. The power is divided enough that there is no one unified voice for Paul, thank god.

the only problem is america is a democratic republic, and the last time there was a republic it lasted (in various states) for a thousand years. So you really can't apply the 200 hundred yr rule to america. However, the steps seem valid, and I would say we are at the abundancy-complaceny step.
