How about kissing my ass? I'm a twenty four year old male. I wasn't even alive to witness the civil rights movement; it was long over before I was born. Now some black leaders think the city of Richmond owes all blacks an apology --- this shit irks me no end. What sense of entitlement do these people really feel like they have? Yes, your people were enslaved, but no one alive today did it.
Most people I speak with seem to agree that society would be able to ignore racism as a whole if reminders of it didn't contintually crop up everywhere from the mouths of the descendents of the original american slaves. You know the word nigger would hold no power if everyone used it casually and without discretion to refer to every idiot --- it would lose all power as a racial powder keg, but if I have to hear one more allusion to some white guy ready to get killed because he said "nigga" in reffering to one of his home slices, I'm just going to start shouting it out loud. Imposing violence on someone weaker than you because they say a word you don't like is a source of great ignorance. When I went to a private school for a year full of good old boy rednecks, there wasn't a day that went by that I didn't hear nigger ten or fifteen times. I never said it, but I also never saw any of the few black students suddenly get up in arms, screaming, "What'd you say cracka? Oh you dead, cracka, you mothafuckin' dead!" Now why was that?
Here comes the white boy credentials: When I was in high school, my best friend in the world was black. He was the coolest dude ever. He was like fonzy to me. One day when I was about to get jumped and beat up in the halls by six black guys just for being white, he ran up and beat the asses of every single one. He put one of their heads through a wall. It was because he was a good guy, and he told me that he didn't care if I called him my "nigga" because he was really a good friend to me when nearly every other black guy at the school had something to prove to his anscestors by punching me in the back of the head, or trying to rob me.
I was actually told one time that I needed to apologize for what my ascestors did to the black nation. I was cornered, and I said, "Yeah, you're right ... my family did fight in the civil war, and I'm sorry. They fought for the Union. I'm sorry for what they did." sarcasm dripping from my voice.
Of course, none of them knew the difference between the union and the confedercy, so they left me alone, but these dumbasses ... these dumbasses calling for entire cities to issue apologies. It's 2007. Race wouldn't even be an issue if black leaders would stop making it one. Myself and my entire generation have been raised without any sort of hate or discrimination in our hearts, except what is constantly put there by other people.
Thank god for that friend in high school. Without his example, who knows what sort of insane neo-nazi I might have become, or what sort of twisted outlook on other people I might foster.

apologising for slavery isn't about racism, and it isn't just about the guys in the ghetto, it is about africa. the west took away a whole generation of young men from africa, at a time when labour was the most important commodity, that is why africans are shit poor and still dying of curable diseases, while the west is so much richer. this imbalance has not been addressed, in fact, the west has used it headstart, gained from the blood of africans to impose more debt on africa, of course corrupt african governments play a part too.
that is what apologising is about, although an apology surely wouldn't help much.

My great-grandad made sure they all had a house on the property, gave them a bit of land to do with what they wished, made sure all the children attended school, and everyone knew how to read. Hell, everyone ate dinner in the main house on the plantation together.

Oddly enough I feel no real urge to give up my small inheritance to pacify anyone. Admitting sins of the father (or great grandfather so to speak) is very different than paying for them.

Im saying that in my humble opinion its unlikely that such a situation was as exactly as you describe, and many slaves stayed on with their owners in post-civil war confederate states as the state of affairs in the south was in such a state of limbo both economically and culturally.

This is all very true. What really bothers me about the whole thing is that only about 20% of the Africans sold into slavery went to the Americas. The majority went to the caribbean to work on sugar plantations. It's not like they are the only ones to be slaves. The Bantu did it first, Greece did it, Rome being the biggest copy-cats of all time did it, Egyptians did it, Arabs did it to some extent, practically everybody in history is guilty of slavery. It all shifted at one point to Africans. Why? Because, I hate to say it like this, but they were a bottomless resource. They also had strong defenses against our diseases because they have been exposed to Europeans for quite some time. We would've enslaved the Native Americans had they not been so defenseless against our diseases. History is so distorted. Slavery wasn't as bad in Egypt as we think it is. Africans and rum weren't the only things being traded in the Triangular Trade route. I'm part Irish and part Native American. I'm not apologizing for shit.

I have to agree, the native maori people of my country still get HUGE compensations for land that was taken off them over 200 years ago, us Pakeha (white people) of today are still made to feel guilty for something that we had no part in, maori people weren't even made slaves and was one of the only countries that Britain colonised that had a treaty.

Even if you never owned a slave, even if your family immigrated here after slavery was abolished, or were too poor when they got here to own slaves you should still apologize for funding a group that takes disporpotionate advantage of welfare, college grants, and for giving them preferential treatment when it comes to jobs, govt contracts, and college admissions

I'm Native American, and I've never fucking had a negro friend. My great-grandparents owned slaves in North Carolina and I feel no need to apologize.
My great-grandad made sure they all had a house on the property, gave them a bit of land to do with what they wished, made sure all the children attended school, and everyone knew how to read. Hell, everyone ate dinner in the main house on the plantation together.
