Whenever I say I work in college radio here lately, people always assume that I am some sort "indie kid". The truth is, i despise these "indie kids" that wander everywhere with Sufjan Stevens on their iPod, tousled hair and flip-flops.
The truth is, I listen to alot of things that are outside of the mainstream. But the reason I like working in college radio is that I get to expose the rest of the world to some of this music. Anyway, here's a short list of artists who any music enthusiast should check out, if they haven't already. Feel free to mock, comment, or whatever (there's a lot more where these came from):
Amon Duul II - Krautrock gods originating in the mid-1970s. Phallus Dei and Yeti are probably my two favorite albums. Improvisational rock combined with psychedelic tendencies and a bit of sludgey noise.
Wire- originators of the post-punk genre, as well as early punk experimenters. First three albums (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154) are a great example of the progression of certain latter-day punk bands towards the post-punk sound, which eventually led to that whole new wave thing. (1979-present)
Boards of Canada - Create angular, mathematic ambient albums that work great spacing out or riding a bus. Ambient, but engaging. Geogaddi is probably the best. (1990s-present)
Hella- Most spastic math rock band around. Complex time signatures, splatter drumming, and insane guitar lines. What those Mars Volta fucks are wanking off to. (recent)
Isis - my friend Chris like to call this "post-metal", and I could buy that as a description. Droopy, plodding metal that still somehow manages to be upbeat. (Recent)
Gang of Four - along with Wire, originator of the post-punk sound. Overtly political, and very good at what they did. Their best was probably Entertainment! from 1979.
Explosions in the Sky- Soaring, triumphant, instrumental post-rock. see "The Earth is not a cold Dead Place" or "Those who tell the Truth must Die, Those who tell the Truth shall live"
Godspeed, you black emperor - while they may be a pretentious Canadian artist collective, they still make great music. Epic rock arrangements up to twenty minutes long, including experiments with dynamics, "found music" and symphonic-esque arrangements. "Lift your Skinny Fists, Like Antennaes to Heaven" is their masterpiece, but "F#A#Infinity" is more accessible.

I am fucking sick of you "death metal" rejects dropping by and posting your bands. Here's a hint, if I cared I'd be listening to them already.
Stop wasting bandwidth.

He didn't name a single death metal band. He barely even named any metal bands.

no kidding dipshit, if you think Gang of Four is death metal you need to bash your skull in with a tire iron for the intelligence boost that will give you.

I could see where you're coming from with that. I certainly think Wire is the better band, but maybe Go4 had better singles, you know what i mean? I mean, "damaged goods" is a damn good song, but Wire albums are pretty much phenomenal all the way through. Plus, Wire is still making decent albums 25 years later, which is also pretty fucking impressive.

I bought the first Gang of Four album back in 1978 or so...79...I don't know.
I thought it lacked 'melody'>
Now "Pink Flag"...I still play in my car today.
You can't beat 25 songs on ONE album.
Dot dash, man. Dot, dash.

hmmm, I hate how when i come back and read over something i posted, it sounds completely different than i meant it. I really come off as a pretentious prick. Not really my intention. and Shlongy, you like Wire but not Gang of Four? how does that make sense?
Oh yeh, and i forgot one of the number one rules of uber: post about films, musuc, or politics = auto -2. I'm an idiot.

I think I might be the indie kid. Except my hair is naturally touseled and irritating, but I do like Sufjan Stevens some.
Next time I'm on Amazon or limewire I'll check out your bands.

I like the postal service. I'm sure none of you have heard of them. You should download some of their stuff if you can even find it.
-------------
erm.... *puts up hand*.. I have.
_____________
I was, uh... Actually kidding. The Postal Service started out fairly unknown, but not long after their conception, it slowly got to the point that almost everyone knew who they were. Hell, they played Such Great Heights in television commercials.
At this point, everyone and their 13 year old sister know who they are, and you can buy their shirts at Hot Topic.

I though you were serious... explains a lot.

I loathe death metal, and of the 3 bands I'm familiar with here, it couldn't be further from it.
There are worse things people can do around here than offer you some new music to take or leave.

You're certainly right about Chris. He's one of those metal nerds that thinks every band is its own genre. "Oh have you heard made out of babies? they're totally neo doom thrash metal" or some shit like that. a fucking cunt-tard, indeed.

Secondly, "my friend Chris like to call this "post-metal"", your friend Chris is a fucking faggot. Music is good or it isnt, people who make these stupid labels are fucking fucktarded cunts.
