Stupid as it may be, I often take offense at all the America bashing that goes on around here, mainly because, well, I'm an American.
I don't consider myself a dumb individual. Yes, I've made some serious mistakes (divorce, drunk driving, etc.) but I'm only human, after all. Apart from those fuck ups, I can name all the planets. I can tell you where pretty much any nation in the world is located. I'm fluent in 2 and a half languages (I'm learning Italian. It's beautiful). I graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Marketing. I play classical guitar and piano. I don't watch NASCAR, and shitfire, man, I even know the metric system.
So....I dunno. That's a decent resume, right?
Anyway, I do bristle at times when people (TTOM, Phuzzygish, Caulain, Apollo, Danger-Ranger, Shandy, etc...) insult my entire nation and everyone in it based on their obviously biased hatred for our government here.
Caulain is especially vibrant in his contempt for all things American.
And that's fine. You have that right. And unfortuanly, it's true. The USA is the biggest bully on earth so it's only natural that people will hate us. Still, though, that is my government, not *me* as an individual. All my friends are very intelligent people....scientists, buisness owners, even a sleazebag lawyer in my posse. And my friends are diverse. Most are white, but there are indians (HOT bitch named Jumana that I want to ejaculate into at every moment in her presence) black, mexican, Chinese, etc.....
I take pride in the fact that I live in a country where, for those who want to, we can all get along together. Sure, there is plenty of racial hatred still out there, but only if you seek it out. I do not.
But yesterday something happened that disgusted me as to the general state of American intelligence (George Bush aside....everybody knows that kid is a jackass).
My boss....my BOSS....a person who is supposedly my "superior," was talking to a bunch of (American) customers. Suddenly she called out to me and shouted,
"Hey, Ebola! Where is Ghana? That's in Europe, right?"
I didn't know what to say. I mean, I know exactly where Ghana is. I always assume that people were born with the same natural curiosity that I have, and have sought out information like that on their own. For fuck's sake, I read the CIA World Factbook like the bible, man, just out of pure and simple curiosity about other nations that I'll never get to see.
Anyway, all these Americans, all of them white, all of them adults, were stupidly looking at me for an answer.
I nodded and said, "Yep. It's in between Italy and Switzerland."
"Ok! Thank you!"
Jesus Christ.
Somebody tell me again how this country became so powerful?
The next time you feel like bashing Americans, I'll hold my tounge.

phuzzy it's simple:
If africa was any good all those black people wouldn't have moved to america in the olden days and struck a deal whereby in return for doing a few chores the white people would feed and clothe them.

This is why I love Ubersite. Nowhere else (at least in the USA) could you say this publicly and get away with it.

Dude, just a thought...
You say this: "Anyway, I do bristle at times when people (TTOM, Phuzzygish, Caulain, Apollo, Danger-Ranger, Shandy, etc...) insult my entire nation and everyone in it based on their obviously biased hatred for our government here."
after you'd reviewed my post with this:
http://www.ubersite.com/m/98598#2308015
"Dickhead.
I used to like you Phuzzy, until you jumped on the goddamned "All Americans Are Stupid" tired old horse."
But then you follow it up by reviewing another post with this:
http://www.ubersite.com/m/98837#2316104
"Going back inside was a very, very smart thing to do.
I've heard some gruesome shit about the goings on down there.
You're safer in Detroit, dude."
Surely that's a little hypocritical?
I'm not stirring shit, I'm genuinely interested in your reasons for the two very polarised reactions... One is a very patriotic reaction to an outsider poking fun at your country, and then a couple days later you say something like that above, without any basis of fact whatsoever?

Quick, who led the British punitive expedition into Abyssinia in 1868?
My point? I didn't know where Ghana is either, aside from somewhere in Africa. I guess I'm not seeing why an in depth knowledge of geography is something everyone who claims not to be a dumbass should be familiar with. The fact that I know the answer to the above question is Sir Robert Napier kinda puts your "geography = smartz n' curiousity" theorem to the test, no?
And honestly, "tounge"? You couldn't even bother to spellcheck a piece about how stupid other people are?

While obviously it is pretty ignorant not to know where Ghana is, sometimes I cring from when I hear Europeans basing the US. Sometimes it is good to keep things in perspective.
For instance, can all the Europeans who bash on the US for lack of geography knowledge tell me where exactly each of the 50 states are, seeing as how many of them are big enough to be countries?
Though I obviously agree that it's NOT a good thing if you can't name where countries like Ghana are located.
*****************
Why does the average person need to know where Ghana is located? Does the average person know the formula for resonant frequency? The formula to figure capacitance? No? Well, I do, so does that make me elite? It simply means it was a necessary part of the education in Electronics.
"Sometimes it is good to keep things in perspective. ."
-----------------------
Point taken, though knowing where countries are located is more of a common knowledge thing.

I thought ME was the only person that did that!
Its rather biased though... IT makes out like every middle eastern country is third world when in fact some countries are far better off then most of the states here... take Kuwait for example. no middle class - you are either rich or an imported foreign worker.
Free university for everyone - interestingly 66% of graduates are women and the majority go on to serve token internships in London, New York or other Eusopean capitals...
AND you get 10k US when you get married.
----------
I read it too.
I don't think it implies anything of the sort about middle eastern countries.
It just doesn't go into details about the class divide between foreign workers and citizens.
I can't wait until we don't need oil just so those lazy fuckers will have to work. I know they are our "allies" but almost every single Kuwaiti person I met was a lazy sack of shit.

knowling a lot of facts only implies that person, if intelligent, had the opportunity to learn those facts.

Bad answer. Anyone who is not a mongoloid or Forrest Gump can go down to the public library and educate themselves. Some of the most respected Americans of all time had little or no formal education, but were self taught. Lincoln, Hemmingway, Franklin, etc....
So...no. You make opportunity. It doesn't come to you.
______________________
A library should not be the primary source for information...because not all information that needs to be known can come from a library, especially if youre dealing with literature or philosophy or religion or even physics or biology. You need the aid of other people to impart to you the information, subject and opinions that is within the simple words on the page of a novel. Any mongolid can read Hemingway or Franklin or JS Mill, but youre not going to fully understand it without aid and in our current society, the best way to find that aid is through education.

I think I have an explanation of the apparently true yet somewhat displeasing (at least to non-hateful people) "Americans are stupid" theory.
Yes, most Americans are stupid, but that is only because most people are stupid, while the American rate of stupidity is no higher than that of any other nation.
BUT, because they are the world's leading cultural and economic power, we see more of their culture, know more about them and what they do, etc. than any other nation by far. So, as every nation is mostly stupid, it makes sense that the one we see the most of seems the most stupid.
And as a small factor, each nation has specific subjects that its citizens are more likely know about. The worst subjects for Americans are international geography and foreign cultures, which is the field of study one's knowledge of is most obvious when one talks to foreigners. So, let's say they're below-average at those among Western nations but above-average in Math and Physics... how often does someone go "Oh, so you're American, eh? Well... a train leaves north from Philadelphia at 50 mps and another south at 60mph at the same time. After an hour, how far about are they?" Really, you guess how intelligent someone is by how much they know about your country, etc., and as a rare Canadian who very much likes The United States, I can still say frankly that most Americans know fuck all about other countries.
They're 110 miles apart by the way. I rest my case.

I like it here it's a good place sure it has it's faults but so does everywhere - the grass isn't always greener.
I've noticed a polarisation of intelligence/education in the US - people either seem to be exceptionally bright and well read and up on things or really really really dumb. Whereas there's a lot more common ground in the UK.
Public schools I guess.
***********
I don't think it's the public schools. School can educate you but not make you bright, and bright
people tend to be more curious. Hence the bright ones being well-read and up on things.
Americans as a group are no dumber than anyone/anywhere else.
that is also a very valid argument.
i just think there is less incentive for people to bother reading up on things here. lowest common denominator and all that.
anyway sweeping generalisations are retarded.

You don't have to become a citizen to live and work here. Just a 'legal permanent resident'. In fact, I'd have to have been living here as a legal permanent resident for 5 years before I could even apply to be naturalised.
================================
I see.
Out of curiosity, why would you want to marry one of us, leave all your friends and family (presuming anybody likes/loves you in the UK) live here, but not become a citizen?
If it's none of my business please tell me to fuck off and die.
mkthnx.

Oh I dunno Apollo.
I once insulted you about coming to America becuase you couldn't find a decent job in that "shithole of a country they call home," to which you responded that Americans were so stupid they had to import intelligent people to do a proper job.
Which, actually, was a pretty damn good reply. I was just being an internet dick. I've never even been to the UK.
I just threw you up there, really, because you're one of the few non-American posters whose name I could remember.
Just curious, by the way, are you, like Filthy, not a citizen of the USA but a "permanent resident?" """
i am neither.
I am on an employment based skills shortage type of visa.
my goal is permanent residency - i'm not sure about citizenship although if I live here i may as well vote i guess plus it would be a bit James Bond to have two passports. The down side of that is the IRS suddenyl becomes interested in my world wide income which i'm not sure I want happening. The UK govt doesn't give a shit.

I dont think that Americans are stupid but you are very egocentric.
---------------------------------------------------------------
true, but more specifically here, geocentric.
Americans are supposedly notoriously ignorant of world geography, but this may be one of the few areas where we should get a break. America is a big country. Most of us only have so much time and so many brain cells to devote to friggin geography and we spend it on oursleves. On our own country.
Let's face it, if you're living in the middle of Europe, in a country the size of New Hampshire, and if you can drive 150 miles in any direction and find yourself in another country - sure you're going to know a lot more about those countries and peoples around you. And you damn well should.
===================
Excellent point. I was once having a drink with an Englishman in an airport bar while waiting to catch a flight. He asked me why Americans so seldom go abroad. I explained to him that, at least in my case, I could go and watch whales off the coast of Alaska, or party on the beaches of Florida and Hawaii on any given vacation, and STILL never see even a 5th of the USA in my entire lifetime.
I mean, I was born in this country and I've only been to about 20 different states. And I'm nearly 40.
:-(
------------
depending on which 20 you might've seen a lot of what there is to see unless you go to extremely specific locations. i've been to 47 and a lot of them blend in with eachother after a while. especially between the mountain ranges.

no. well they marry eachother so i guess it would depend on your definition. i can think of at least one couple that's like that but i think she's working on her citizenship being that she has 14 years to do so. a lot of the eastern european girls that get steady work are here as permanent residents or employment authorizations. same with the south american chicks.

Is anyone really dumb enough to argue that knowledge of where GHANA is is MORE useful than the thousands of other things you could learn which would make you a more effective manager? Really? Seriously?
Give me a fucking break. London, Tokyo, New York City, etc. yea you might want to know where those are but Ghana not so much. Fuck Ghana and fuck everyone with their stupid attitude that every tiny little country on the map is equally important - that's not reality.
----------------------
Reality is in the eye of the beholder...an arrogant "my way is the only right way" attitude only serves to render an individual with glaucoma from limiting their flexibility. What serves as important/useful information for one person may not for another, and vice versa. Yes, I agree that maybe a manager of a domestic business need not know the location of Ghana, but that doesn't mean it isn't vital to another person.
On the other hand, seeing things from EVERY perspective has often rendered me immobile in the course of decision-making due to indecisiveness. So, speaking from my life experience, I believe life is a multitude of grey shades, in which we have to know when to use the appropriate filters to narrow things down to black and white for applicable situations.

Maybe your boss is your boss because he/she was busy learning something useful while you were memorizing where all the third world countries are.
By the way - way to be a douche and continue to help them bash our country.

How does knowledge of the geography of our planet equate to useless information?

"Anyway, I do bristle at times when people insult my entire nation and everyone in it based on their obviously biased hatred for our government here."
But, our government is "by the people and for the people". If others around the world have a problem with the U.S. government, why can't they take issue with the people that elected it?

I dont think that Americans are stupid but you are very egocentric.
Like most countries you have both cretins and geniuses, its just that one of your cretins happens to be rather prominant.
I come from Scotland. What do people know about Scotland? Haggis, Tartan, kilts, being ginger, fighting, drinking and, if youre really unlucky, Rabbie fucking Burns.
Theyre all stereotypes and (most of them) are wrong, Ive never worn a kilt in my life, I think haggis tastes horrible, Im not ginger and Rabbie Burns makes me want to punch myself in the ears just so I never have to listen to any of his twee shite ever again.
You just got to roll with it sometimes.
ps
The drinking and the fighting is completly true
