I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town
He'd tousle my hair and say, son take a good look around, this is your hometown
This is my hometown

I should do one of these, except I'd like to take the pictures myself. I'll probably have to include a few off Google.

Your state is pretty ugly, except that Skyway is one cool looking bridge. It's a little similar to one in Brisbane, except way cooler on the bottom.

I like New Jersey, I can see it from where I work. Every day I wave to the people over there across the river. They can't see me, it's a mile and a half, but FUCK 'EM! I wave anyway.

I was a Nordiques fan for a while because they kicked so much ass on NHL '95 and I've never had a real favorite hockey team. Wendel Clark (my favorite player ever), Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, Adam Foote, plus their goalies were Staphane Fiset and Jocelyn Thibault. I like anyone who pronounces their last name t-bo.
===
the rivalry was just so intense within the province since hockey is a religion here.
even in class teachers talked about it.

i'm from Illinois, living in Chicago currently. i thought it would be nice living in Chicago, being around my people, but i quickly leared that Chicagoans don't even know IL extends below Springfield. i'm from farther south. so no, i'm not from the DC area, but my office is there. i'm never actually there, though. my office has a phone in it and nothing else. i only go there for important meetings (they have to be important or i won't waste my time flying over there). i do so love the area, though. i always have a good time when i'm in DC.

as far as where i'm from, i cannot divulge that information. maybe about ten people on ubersite know my last name and that's ten people too many. all i'm going to say is that it's in South Jersey. that's where my Welsh ancestors hooked up with my Irish ancestors (the O'Bannons). and no, that's not it. my last name is Welsh in origin. i actually went there to steal the sign, but when i got there, there were only two poles where a sign used to be. we asked a local where it was and he said someone had stolen it a few years back. har har, that's my family for ya.

and yes, Princeton is nothing but a bunch of stuck up rich people and i hate it. you can't meet girls there unless you are super rich or the total opposite- a Jersey guy. i've gotten like two phone numbers there and one of them, although her real number, didn't answer and the other one i just didn't feel like putting the effort into. there are a lot of unusual things about Princeton that i just don't have the time to go into about. i call it the Twilight Zone, though.

if i want to have a good time when i'm on business travel in Jersey, i have to drive to Philly or NYC, which is an hour drive either way.

Pray tell, why do you loathe them so? Is it because they popularized the zone trap? Do you hate Martin Brodeur and Scotty Gomez? Do they offend you because they're called the Devils? Is there some other reason?

i spend a lot of time in Jersey. my Welsh ancestors planted there around the time the first pilgrims came over. there is a city with my namesake, but i'll never reveal where it is. if you know me, it's fitting, trust me.
------------------

I know your first name, but not your last name. Paterson? Hackensack? Camden? If your last name was Elizabeth, it would turn my world upside down.

i've partied around Rutgers in Brunswick and had a pretty good time. Princeton is boring as hell. it's mostly people like locksly around there who talk about which country club they belong to and think it actually matters to people how much money they have. get real, people.
---------

I didn't even bother applying to Princeton University. I come from what Caul likes to call a slum, I'm not up with the rich people in Ridgewood and Montvale. Just a middle class Irish guy.

my favorite strip club is in Burlington, where the original Burlington Coat Factory is. man, that place is a dump. of course, i still need to make time to visit Satin Dolls, AKA the Bada Bing. i can't believe i haven't checked it out yet. or Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash. definitely going there next week if i have the time.
-----------------------------------------

I live right down the road from Satin Dolls, but not 18 yet. I pass it every day going to school.

if you want to experience the real Jersey accent, i've found that the trash in Trenton have the thickest ones. it really is an experience listening to them talk.
--------------

My dad and his dad had thick accents coming from New York and Newark projects. Up in wayyy North Jersey everyone talks like rich people, more toward Newark and Paterson you get accents. When I visited the NYLC conference in Washington over the summer people would say "why do you have an accent?" to me, which is weird because I never considered myself having an accent before.

What part of the country are you from? for some reason I imagine you from Maryland, DC area.

I hate the Pulaski skyway.

Just looking at it hurts my bladder.

My fiance used to live in Hoboken, I lived in Southern MD. Four and a half hour drive, and I refused to stop and pee until I get there (I wish the astrobaut thing had happened a few years ago, I totally would have stolen her idea). when I got to Pulaski I was so close but the traffic was almost always shit.

----

acceptable reason.

I was taking four hour drives visiting colleges in Washington DC and Pennsylvania (Georgetown, American, Catholic, St. Joes, and Villanova) and each time coming back the Turnpike was hell right by Newark Airport. Not so much the skyway, but it still tacked another hour on.

I hate the Pulaski skyway.

Just looking at it hurts my bladder.

My fiance used to live in Hoboken, I lived in Southern MD. Four and a half hour drive, and I refused to stop and pee until I get there (I wish the astrobaut thing had happened a few years ago, I totally would have stolen her idea). when I got to Pulaski I was so close but the traffic was almost always shit.

haha that's all right, we take a small measure of pride in our shittiness.

They get famous, they leave. Can't imagine why.

That's what Sinatra did. The only time he came back to Jersey was his funeral.

Springsteen however tours here all the time, even in the old bars he played in as a teenager in the 60s.

I'm sorry, -2 for coming from the same state as My Chemical Romance.

Didn't say I liked them. They get booed at concerts in their own hometown, people throw bottles at them in other places. Had to mention it, due to the fact that Emo started in my state.

lol

to be honest, there's pretty much nothing in my area but highways every fifty feet, urban malls, street gangs and refineries in residential areas pouring out bizarre toxic patterns into the sky. You know how gangsters and thugs love their shitty ghetto neighborhoods and they join gangs to defend it? that's pretty much how New Jerseyans feel about their state.

I know I can't compare to the beautiful pristine wilderness of Canada's millions of miles of forest and grass. The closest we come is a tiny little patch of flowers in a glass cabinet in the governor's house.

we have nicer words for slum here, like beautiful, down-to-earth, well-worn, industrial, or even better, an "asset to the nation"

It's a nice place.

It's a good thing you are not in charge of your local tourist office because your "domain" looks like a slum.

BB: Yeah, but it's the kind of shithole you grow to love
Darko: I see your rating as highly existential, in a philosophical way.
TTOM: Is Jersey well familiar over in Scotland? I'm pretty sure it has a bad reputation, as every AMerican I've met from outside Jersey thinks it's a shitheap.

The only time a Jersey person has civic pride is when someone's insulting their state.

Well, it opened in IE 7.

It's a shame, because I hate IE7 since it freezes whenever I close a tab.
