Wikipedi says...
Surrealism[1] is a cultural, social and political movement asserting that liberation of the human mind, and subsequent liberation of the individual and society, can be achieved by exercising the imaginative faculties of the "unconscious mind" to the attainment of a dream-like state different from, or ultimately "truer" than, everyday reality. Surrealists believe that this more truthful reality can bring about personal, cultural, and social revolution, and a life of freedom, poetry, and uninhibited sexuality.

The modern artists in the Surrealist Movement have far different influences than that of Dali and Margritte. Here in the 21st century, they find so much more to draw on in this media enriched environment. Instead of returning to juxtapose work my elder masters, they are turning corporate images upside down and attempting to get the viewer to accept the fantastic in paint on canvas; something increasingly more difficult in a time of digital effects.
Below are a number of examples of Contemporary Surrealism. Notice how broad the styles are, ranging in spectrum from the old flat style to pop sensationalism to photo-realism. At all times however, the artist is attempting to communicate something deeper, something transcendental - something that is the essence of the Surrealist Movement...

you would do well to exclude wikipedia from your list of citations. pretty pictures of symbolism and nice job of compiling them tidily for me to view at my discretion. i cannot stand it when they use chess boards, chess pieces (ie pawn, king), chess match (especially when they have never played a fucking game in their life, nor can they appreciate the paradox of the game), any reference to chess in any expression be it figurative, literal, sarcastic, intentional or spur of the moment, spoken, written, *drawn, any of the previous, most of the previous, or all of the previous.
