We want to believe that someone cares without developing the relationships so that ACTUAL people will care, so we believe the diety cares because he/she/it is just and would NEEEEEVER make a good person suffer.

By the way, I would like to hear thoughts on the whole praying paradox.
How is telling a supposedly all-knowing being what you're feeling not either insulting to the all-knowing being or at least very presumptuous on your part? I honestly haven't worked that one out.
-------------
I suppose it's mostly about us maintaining our end of the relationship. Sort of a less harsh version of what DrogoRoch said.
But also, psychologically, it is very helpful to us (where us = everybody, everywhere). Maybe some of you macho bodybuilder construnction workers dont think so, but we all get lonely with our feelings sometimes, and we all have things we just need to get off our chest. Praying is a good way of doing that. We tell God (or the pillow, if you dont believe in God) what's going on with us, how we feel, what's bothering us, who we want dead, etc., and it's instant relief. The shit we hold so close to the vest that it's leaving bruises, you give that up, and you feel better. It gives a sensation that we're not alone with our problems (or our successes). Whether anybody's listening is immaterial; it's whether or not we feel like somebody's there that matters. I think there's somebody there.
In my experience, praying makes my life better 100% of the time. I believe it's because God helps me out. If I'm wrong, and I dont think that I am, then it's just pure psychology, and it's still helpful.

How can someone rate this negative? I mean aside from the entertainment value, it's a discussion about a two-sided argument and both sides are well presented here. That's like disagreeing with both rabbits on the subject and that doesn't make sense...
fuck I'm stoned so I hope that made sense.

I think the whole praying thing comes down to this.
Yes God (if he be there) does already know what you are praying about; but he likes to hear you beg for it.

Fry: So that's my story, Father Changstien El Gamal. Is there anything religion can do to help me find my friend?
Priest: Well, we could join together in prayer.
Fry: Uh huh, but is there anything useful we can do?
Priest: No.

I half expected to see a bunch of comments like: "Hello? R-tard? That's not how it works. Praying is neither insulting nor presumptuous because... <insert witty/smart explanation here>"

i have to deduct -1 because I bet you got the gravitational fields bit from family guy.
The Cicero quote is a classic and quite true, the problem is when people who cannot be persuaded by reason to be good citizens actually have a say in your democracy...aka right now the Religious Right in the US.
Plato and Hamilton were correct in saying that the general public is not nearly intelligent enough as a collective to vote in elections.
