I've done a few posts on global warming in the past, and they seem to go down well with both sides of the issue, so I thought I'd do it again.
NB: I do not intend to cite any sources whatsoever, as I'm doing this all from my general knowledge, but it's worth remembering that I am always right.
Global warming just means that the earth is getting warmer....anyone that denies this, is a fucking retard...everyone can see it in the weather in our own lifetimes....deserts are expanding, less snow, etc.
However, that doesn't mean humans are causing it....I've always remained slightly sceptical as I know how much the media loves 'we're all gonna die' stories....on the other hand, many many scientists who've spent considerably more time looking into this than me seem to think we are doing it.....or at least speeding up natural warming, so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
We humans, as a whole, are causing the globe to heat up.
What do we do about it?
1st lets zoom out on the climate change issue a bit.
The climate changes every now and again, until it goes into a steady period.
It is worth mentioning at this point that this stuff is really fucking complicated, so if you want to disagree with me know what you're talking about....a little bit of googling won't do, cos you'll only find something some twat who doesn't know what he's takling about has written.
The steady period we're in right now is called an interglacial period, and we have been for about 10,000 years.
Many people think that interglacial period is a period between ice ages......this isn't true, we are currently in an ice age.....hence all the ice.
An interglacial period is a period within an ice age when the glaciers temporarily retreat.
They tend to last about 12,000 years....however this one could be as much as 50,000 years......people trying to work out how long our current interglacial will last have come up with the figure 28,000 years....but if you look into how they've worked it out it is essentially a guess.....an educated guess..but you certainly wouldn't bet your house on it.
Basically.....we don't know.....or I don't know, which as far as you lot are concerned may as well be the same thing.
In other words without unnatural (human) intervention....at some point within the next 40,000 years, very probably sooner rather than later, the climate is going to change...the ice age will either end altogether or the glaciers will come back.
If the ice age ends all together then humanity will be able to colonise the entire globe for the first time. Sea levels will rise considerably, and a combination of massive sea defences and relocating to higher ground will be needed.
If the glaciers extend again then everything on a level with and north of London will be buried under a shit load of ice, and the climate will be such that we won't be able to grow anywhere near as many crops as we do now.
With human intervention....it appears, though we can't be certain, that the ice age is going to end a tad sooner than expected.....or maybe not....could be due to end about now anyway.
We humans, as a whole, are causing the globe to heat up.
What do we do about it?
Celebrate?

I know it makes life easier to believe that the earth is gigantic and mysterious and that we can't possibly be affecting how it works-- because it is so...mysterious...and giant...

its not really all that tough to see the ways in which we adversely affect pretty much every part of the environment. the water, the soil, the air, the creatures. it is factual.

Relative to the volume of water and the disparity of your internal body temperature to the specific area in which you are pissing into the ocean the effects are negligible. Insignificant, even.
Compound that with 6.6 billion people, and every single fucking day of humanity's existence throw in all the other needless, destructive, wasteful, negligent, damaging, ignorant shit we dump, burn, bury or spew into the environment and eventually it IS adding up to something pretty significant.

i'm sure that if we disappear or devolve back to huts, this planet will erase most of our traces much quicker than a 1000 years.

I say say that it's human arrogance that has brought us to the point where we HAVE done something to alter the planet.
The planet will survive after we've killed ourselves off, because it adjusts over a period of thousands of years.
Give it 1000 years after we've killed ourselves off to the point of living in huts and subsistence farming and the planet will have adjusted itself to eat the CO2 emissions we created.
It's too bad we won't have the collective scientific mind left to celebrate it.
