Spawn is one of those comics that doesn't have a huge following like Marvel or DC comics do, but it is the stuff of legends. The movie version cannot do the comics justice in any shape, form, or fashion so if that's all you know of Spawn, well...just forget it. For those not familiar with the story, Spawn is a former assassin who, upon death, was recruited by Hell to lead their armies at Armageddon. Given all sorts of BAMF powers and an obscenely wicked costume, he is returned to Earth with almost no memory of his previous life. Wikipedia has more if you're interested.

Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane did a Batman/Spawn crossover. I've never read it, but reviews were mixed. If its the one I'm thinking of, Spawn catches a Bat-a-rang in the face and sews up the cut with a shoelace.

I've always found Spawn covers to not be that special. It seems like Todd MacFarlane (who is a complete prick, by the way) thinks the more he can throw into an image, the better it will be.
Don't get me wrong, he's still talented, but I don't think halfway close to special.
