Here's a piece that a friend of mine wrote for our bluegrass band. I love the lead singer's voice on this...I helped with the bass guitar and the recording/mixing efforts. We're looking for constructive feedback on this piece, hence I thought I'd share with the "master critics"...good enough to play out in public, hopefully?

Cousin Cody

At harvest time he'd come from Tennesee
To help my pa take in the crops
Cousin Cody, the same age as me
We'd work those fields until we'd drop
And on Sundays 'neath that Illinois sky
After church we'd talk and fish
He'd tell me stories about his Dixie land
And to go there someday was my wish

It's been three years since I've seen my cous'
And they say trouble's brewin' south
The rebel states have declared war on us
And Mr. Lincoln wants my help
I left the farm in 1862
I begged my mama not to weep
They marched us down through ol' Kentucky blue
To a place called Shiloh, Tennessee

The mornin' after we had set up camp
The rebels took us by surprise
Fightin' hard all day against their stand
'Till their cannons broke our line
I ran back through the woods to save my skin
With a rebel horseman in pursuit
He trapped me down along a sandy ridge
And I saw him aim his gun and shoot

And out of nowhere came a single blast
And the rebel horseman slumped and fell
Upon the ridge stood someone from my past
A southern face I knew so well

Cousin Cody never said a word
As he turned and walked away
They said he'd died out there in Gettysburg
But no one ever found his grave

Hey capt! I've speeded it up 10% , but since i don't have the whole setup ready yet, you have to make due with the pumping compressor of my soundcard, which this (newer,better?) pc has.
I'll update the link, when i have my dinosaur-pc back up, and runned it properly.
Must say, i do like it already better this way .Sorry for the strange compressing...

The singer's got a good voice. The music is well played. I like how everything sounds but I don't like the song. It's consistent from start to finish, but I think this consistency makes the song fall flat. There's no change in the singing or the intensity of the playing that makes me care. It's finishing up in my headphones and I'm actually a little drowsy because of it.

I'd say with a different set of lyrics this could be a sweeter song, or some sort of southern lullabye. But for a song dealing with battle there should be something a little disruptive in it - some additional drums halfway through to suggest a marching pace, or simply something military.

I tend to agree on this statement, although i just listened to it a few times in the background .
Personally i like breaks,cuts,twists and unexpected turns . Also it's a little slow to my liking, i always think that music should make you wanna dance and sing, i'll get this on up say 10%, see how it feels then...I'll get back on this one, have a 2 for the time being !

Give the fiddle a little more echo/reverb. The mandolin could use a little volume.
The guitar sounds like it has a string out of tune. I like the vocals.
