There is a certain joy that Nature holds
That calms the soul and draws the mind from fear;
All Nature's coloured palette, calms and bolds,
Seems brighten hearts and draw them closer near.
So here it was that Alice did go
Unto The Gardens at The Cliff's low edge,
And there she saw the Sage One bent down low,
His wizened, linéd face in flowered hedge.
"Oh, Sage One, listen," murmured Alice,
"I bear a burden I take up with you—"
She held her head up, and her jaw was set—
He shook his head and said, "I'll speak what's true.
"Your lover's off to battle—I can't lie;
I fear to say this, but they all will die."

"Oh, Alice, the battle will be wild—
Our armies in a furious rage will meet;
Their armor will be hewn and bodies piled;
The blood and gore will pool beneath their feet.
Rich scarlet rivers flood the battlefield—
I see as if it was before my eyes—
A crimson plasma bathes the swords they wield;
The air is thick with wails and screams and cries.
The force of war will crush them, every one,
Even as their bows are drawn and swords are crossed—
When last of mists of blood falls 'neath the sun,
Their body or their soul is fully lost.
"Oh Alice, please pray that Charles dies—
For if he lives, him you won't recognize."
