The Gardens in their beauty seemed to fade,
The artistic flora wilted all around;
The peace amongst the flower'd, leaféd glade
Was lost, and in a wave of sorrow drowned.
The cliff ahead her towered in the sky,
The dangerous rocks then threatened all to fall
Around her, just as all her hopes would die,
When Charles marched home, standing proud and tall.
A tear of crystal, precious as a gem,
In slow infinity it wound its path;
From her cerulean eyes she tried to stem
Her maddening grief, and her grief's maddening wrath.
"Oh, Charles," whispered she into the night,
"If you return, please keep our love alight."
One month, one torturous eternity,
Crept by in sorrow for young Alice,
While on the field of battle Enmity
Clashed man on man as both great forces met.
As War's last chaos finally fled away,
Young Alice stayed in her hill abode—
She waited, fearful, for the very day
When Charles, ever-changed, walked down the road.
The day upon the soldiers' return home,
Her lover trudged, disheartened, up the path—
His downcast countenance turned towards the loam;
Graced not his lips a smile nor a laugh.
And when they met each other eye to eye,
She knew at once—his soul indeed did die.
