I just found a cool video. I think it's amazing how people take the time to waste time to find things like this. Still pretty cool though.

The video was pretty neat, but this just has far too high a rating for nothing but a link to someone else's video.

I work with GIS (i.e. aerial mapping). I can say with certainty that most of them are hoaxes. The "FUCK" written in the field was an edit to the MrSid file in Google Earth....which is dork-talk for saying that it is photoshopped. The one in the Eastern US is obviously the FireFox symbol...which is their little way of dropping an Easter Egg.
