And when they met each other eye to eye,
She knew at once—his soul indeed did die.

"Oh, Alice. . ." he drew her in his arms;
An unapproachable sadness filled his voice—
A grief that both disheartens and alarms
And turns to sorrow what should have been rejoice.
"I'm changed, I know—" in weary voice said he—
"Before my eyes I've seen Death in His rage;
For you I am unworthy; hear my plea:
Let the curtain close upon our stage—
Would you to hold these bloodied hands of mine,
These hands that have with gore and steel been filled?
Would you to find my hideous soul divine,
When I am but a savage man who's killed?"
Then Alice whispered, "Your words are true.
You'll never be for me, nor me for you."
The Gardens beauteous peace no longer held;
The flowering trees encompassed her in fear;
The arbor's hedges furious wrath expelled;
The blackened night stole all that she held dear.
She climbed the cliff, ascended to its peak;
The wind furled 'round her in the moon's white glow;
A shining tear wound down her smooth, pale cheek,
And fell in darkness to the ground below.
She followed, with a leap, her single tear. . .
The rippling wind flowed through her golden locks. . .
The ground rushed up and met her like a spear,
Impaled her broken body on the rocks.
Her crimson blood now soaked the muddied soil;
Another soul had left this Mortal Coil.
When Alice deserted her Charles,
He into her small dwelling did intrude;
Her table he his sword did lay upon;
"She loved me not. . ." he did himself delude.
The lunar shafts that fell on Alice
Now bathed her lover in its purest light;
And, to repay to his victims his debt,
A one last life he'd take right here tonight.
His lethal blade now glinted in the moon. . .
It ripped his stomach, spilling forth his gore;
His love, his life, so strong, now gone so soon—
Abluting blood now pooled across the floor.
From wall to wall the plasmaic crimson spread;
Now War had left two victims, lovers, dead.
