As I step off the 10th floor of the high-rise block I realise how true the saying is. Your life really does flash before your eyes when you are about to die.
As 9 goes by I remember childhood innocence and dreams. Anything and everything was possible. And I had dreams, ohh yes so many wonderful dreams.
At the 8th floor those teenage angst years of gawky teeth and greasy skin and Sarah lovely Sarah. Hope sprung eternal even then.
Ahhhh, there goes the 7th, just like my college education, all to brief. I dropped out, lost in that world of highbrow intellects.
6 seems to take an eternity to go by, working in the supermarket, stacking shelves and sweeping floors. Dreams slipping away.
5th a blur of drugs and alcohol.
At the 4th memories of sadness, depression, counselling and medication.
And as the 3rd goes rushing by I remember hope and her name was Maria. Like an Angel she came into my life and made me see the person I could be. She revived my dreams and aspirations. I wanted to do it all. For her!
2nd A hasty call, a message on the answer-phone, no explanation, so cold.
I'm leaving!
How could she rip my heart out like that?
1st Hang on a second, she was at work .
Ohhhhhhh Bugger!
