Dunno.

I just am.

I guess when I think of Canada I feel an intangible sense of satisfaction - even though we are far from perfect - I think we stack up pretty well on the international stage.

I like our flag. I like hockey and curling and wearing a toque.

Who doesn't like beavers, moose and loons?

Let's face it - Maple Syrup is awesome, back bacon tastes good and poutine is heart-stoppingly delightful.

We have a system of government that is fundamentally interested in the health and welfare of its population. (However poorly it executes that interest at times.)

I feel safe here. I feel happy.

There are many things about my country that annoy and disappoint me - but those are generally problems that are found with any global society. We can do better... but at the end of the day all nations can.

Of course humanity has it's many flaws and those transcend our colorful little countries that appear on various maps - but when I see Canada a smile comes to my face and the deep satisfaction of "I AM CANADIAN" resides somewhere in my soul.

Hooray for beer!

You must be sniffing glue. From a normal person's point of view, seeing you argue how different you are is really embarassing. You are a result of our government's national unity campaign and if there is a problem with national unity (not only here*), you should ask yourself why instead of eating that shit up.

If one day canadian culture isn't entirely based on "not being American" and on some things with actual CONTENT, perhaps I'll consider it but for now, it is a failed project. A failed experiment we should all leave to start new homes instead of trying to force this illusion into our brain.

YES, SO UNIQUE! An enclave of french people that will look like Lousiana in less than a century! Or that is no different to what parts of the south of the US aka Mexico, will look like in a few genarations! Minorities, a Canadian-only phenomenon! Woohoo!

I'm gonna tell you what's unique to us. A submissive english population whose ancestors (loyalists) walked thousands of miles to flee one of the greatest democracy revolution of all time. And a french population beated into submission who also lost its greatest intellectual elite to that same revolution in its early history.

A country founded by left-overs. lmao!

Talking with canadians on the internet has turned me into a seperatist and a faithful american lover.

Easy shooter - that was but one example. There are many more - but if you have automatically pre-judged them ALL as trivial then you are suggesting that we are nothing more than American clones.

Which is just plain stupid.

As far as dealing with the stubborn entitlement of the French Canadian population - that is abso-fucking-luetely unique to us. If you can't see that... well... then you are full of shit. It's obvious.

Do you really think your limited, biased, and contextual re-telling of Canadian history is making some sort of valid point? ( I have said it before - it really is like arguing with a petulant child.)

I'm french-canadian and you yourself say that we have a distinct culture.

While that is true to some extent, I have no problem admitting that we are massively influenced by americans to a point where i find it only EMBARASSING to waste time bringing up those trivial 'differences'.

You live in english canada, which is even more similar to the US yet so MANY of you persist that you are so different and focus on this vague 'uniqueness'.

I'm not saying you're an American clone. I'm saying that Canada suffers from a severe identity crisis. If it wasn't the case, it wouldn't be so desparate to distance itself from it's neighbor, it would not a give a shit. The things on which you define your 'culture' on are no more than regional differences that can be found between Boston and Cleveland.

Get a grip you brainwashed fucking clown.

There are lots of things that are unique to us. Cranky French Canadians are one of them.

If you are too jaded or bitter to see acknowledge them that just showcases how poopy-pantish you truly are.

And the best part is we have every natural resource there is, and gigatons of it.

Bottom line is - he IS a negative prick and you are not much better. At least have fleeting pockets of neutrality and I inexplicably find some sort of conversational progress with you (even if it seems to revert daily.)

I can definitively say that HE started back with the insults in this case, HE was the one that 'broke the rules' I laid out - so fuck him, and quite frankly fuck you.

Now, while I wouldn't characterize myself as having a "problem" with gay people - I am honest enough to admit that watching two guys tongue kiss still makes me squirm. So does that mean I have issues with gay?

Thing is - watching ugly people hump also creeps me right out. So it could be that I simply just find it unattractive and gross? Hmmm? OH, and perhaps not mean that I want to have the bum sex - but that I've repressed that desire it somehow/place?

i don't agree.

conditioning your brain into thinking that everyone sucks, on a 'micro or macro level', is not very healthy.

---

Oh 'WE' suck alright. Pretty significantly.

All one really needs to do is take a look at society's macro level of suck:

War
Oppression
Racism
Corruption
Greed
Exploitation

I could expand that list - but I think that sufficiently shows some pretty high level bi-products of humanity's continued interaction with each other.

I think it is safe to say on a very casual level that those things suck.

Ergo : WE suck for allowing that kind of shit to happen.

Now, individually people are absolved of this yucky overwhelming feeling of 'suck' through something you might have heard me mention a time or two around these parts before: willful ignorance. Yup, luckily this wonderful device affords 'we the people' the moral flexibility to enjoy/struggle with our lives on a micro level - all the while continuing to feed the macro level suck-fest with our sustained lack of awareness.

Quite frankly I see nothing unhealthy about my perception of reality. Nor do I see anything particularly unhealthy about yours, or Indo's.

Not unhealthy, dishonest.

i don't agree.

i had a friend who SPOKE like you (didn't say WAS, don't poopy pant me) . he eventually lost contact with reality and plunged into deep depression. i know that the last time i saw him, i took him to the beach for some sun, almost out of pity. he spent half the time eyeing everyone and muttering under his breath how they were stupid. he would start deep philosophy convos at the most awkward moments. he was doing everything wrong. the more he isolated himself with his behavior, the more he justified himself and grew agressive from the negative looks he got from others. it was a sad vicious circle and needless to say, we were FUCKING happy to get rid of him at the end of the day.

he might have decided to do something about it, i heard he became a nurse later.
funnily enough, he's like the red-hed clone of indoninja. same face and physique.

anyway, conditionning your brain into thinking that everyone sucks, on a 'micro or macro level', is not very healthy.

i think rob has to reconcile himself with humanity.

i don't know why people would like all humans to change. i'm not saying we should sit on our laurels and say "fuck that, we're intolerant and greedy! let's gas ethnic minorities and build car seats with them" but what matters in life, is what a man can do and cannot do. not what i would like. that's nonesense.

if you think billions of humans will change to make you happier, you're in for a long ride of deceptions. so why not accept reality as it is and contribute your little share of evolution within those parameters instead of day dreaming about an entirely different world.

"humanity sucks. humanity is greedy. humanity is intolerant. humanity is ignorant...."

ok...now what?

"but humanity sucks. humanity is greedy. humanity is intolerant. humanity is ignorant...."

i know but what happens next?

"well you know..."humanity sucks. humanity is greedy. humanity is intolerant. humanity is ignorant...."

ZZZzzzzZZZzzzzz

---

I do try to reconcile myself with humanity... every single day.

I look at this world 'we' have claimed and observe how badly it is failing in certain areas and I think - good fucking LORD we suck. I then either shrug my shoulders [like most people], ignore it [like most people], or go online and write about my observation [like... um... wait...]

... that isn't what most people do is it? They tend to stop at the shrugging and the ignoring.

Anyway, I write my little blurb and receive all kinds of feedback on it - some positive, some ambivalent, some decidedly negative - but it ALL helps with my continued reconciliation. Uber has become part of my process, you might say. An opportunity to not only vent - but to connect with an interesting cross-section of nerds, degenerates and otherwise spectacular digital representations of humanity.

I understand that SOME people are tired of me pointing out that humanity is greedy, intolerant, and ignorant.

To which I have to say : I don't fucking care. This is my post, I'll point that shit out if I wanna.

i was talking in general.

you can't deny that it's the new trend that people set the bar so high to explain their failures.

for example, a young kid who complains he can't get a job because he expects to be paid enough to live a hip hop star lifestyle, when in reality he just wants to stay home.

an obese guy who watches magazines and tell himself "i'll never be like that" when he knows he just doesn't have the will to start working out and dieting.

people who would rebuild the world overnight and change humanity because they are either tired of not fitting in or are worried about problems, but in both case have no intention to do anything about it and will throw the blame on coorporations (they consume from or work for) and governments (they elected).

it's easy to say 'i can't do anything about it' when you put things in that perspective.
a large part of our problems come from that rather common defeatism.

i was merely discussing that problem, whether you fit into that category is entirely up to you. i think you do, but ultimately, you're the one who has to figure it out.

---

hmmm,

fair enough.

Generally speaking they are excellent observations... just not very applicable to my observations.

... and really not that far from my continued use of the term 'willful ignorance'.

If that obese man you are talking about truly did convince himself that he will never be like for any other reason that his own lack of ambition - THAT is being willfully ignorant.

If that young kid truly has such an obnoxious level of entitlement - then he is willfully ignorant to the reality of life and the vast amount of sucking it inevitably has.

Do you really, honestly think I am of the opinion the worlds problems will ever be fixed overnight? Because if you truly have that impression - that is just fucking stupid.

I do think it IS possible to change the world, though ... and it will require a massive effort and likely things need to get far worse before that ever happens - but I do fundamentally believe in humanity. I think we all have the capacity for awesome.... it is just our capacity for failure is currently winning.

"the art thing I am guessing it is something you enjoyed to make or wasn't that expensive."
---

What an amazing capacity for utter marginalization you have. Why would you guess that? Why would my enjoyment of the creative process affect the generosity behind it's donation? .

Can you honestly not see how negative you are?

-------------------------

Because it isn't a sacrifice. Lets be honest here Rob. If you painted $100,000 pictures and donated them that would be something, if you paint some piece of shit (probably better than anything I could do, but still a piece of shit) that fetches a hundred bucks at a charity auction that isn't sacrifice. That is something you enjoyed to do and probably got a rush about having your work sold (even if it was only bought because it was for charity).

Being generous is doing something that takes real effort, real sacrifice. I am not negative I am honest.

"I DO judge the world and humanity for its many failures. You agree with those judgments - but find fault in my repeated discussing of them. You take offense that I do not take more action on a micro level - even though almost ALL of my observations are on a macro level.

You judge me for my admitted failures - yet you seem to let humanity off pretty lightly.

Why is that?"

I don't have the incredable arrogance or ignorance or whatever it is that allows you to go on ad nauseum about the failures of humanity while not making an effort to change it. Your differentiating between micro and macro as an excuse is laughable.

I judge you by the shortcomings you judge humanity for. I judge you for being a hypocrite.

You are a joke Rob. Take that as negative "crankypantsness" or fucking sack up and actually try and help people, or falling short of that shut the fuck up about change until you are willing to do something.

"Why do you feel my lack of gratuitous donation of both time and money somehow marginalizes my philosophical observations of humanity?"

---

Ok I won't mince words.

Because given the amount of effort you give to charities, causes, etc your "observations" make you either a hypocrite or a liar.

If you really care about the suffering of others you are a hypocrite.

If you don't really care you are a liar.

You logic is flawed, but I appreciate your candor.

"I have a problem here with your use of most people, you seem to point it out like you aren't in that crowd, and you are."
---

That is absurd. I don't "seem" to point anything out like am not in that crowd - if anything I am constantly admitting or pointing out my own personal failures and apathy.

I KNOW I am part of certain crowds. Other crowds I am not so much a part of.

---
"You aren't an idiot you know there are things out there you can do to help, but you don't. And there is nothing wrong with that."
---

This is not true. I do help. Not much, but I do. I >should< do more - most people should.

But I am not saying:

"You people are fucking horrible because you don't do enough charity work."

I am saying:

"As a society we are fucking horrible, because we perpetuate such an imbalanced hierarchy of human worth based on geography, greed and profit that it requires the most altruistic members to form organizations to provide even the most basic of necessities for humanity's bottom rung."

---
"Everybody has different priorities most people rate their own well being and comfort well above alleviating the suffering of those worse off. but if you don't consider yourself in that crowd you are either a liar or blind to your own actions."
---

But I do consider myself in that crowd. So I am neither a liar or blind to my actions.

Nor worthy contempt.

---
Now maybe you are considering yourself in that "most people" but it still bugs me because it smacks of hypocrisy. It is like the drunk preaching to the bar that alcohol is evil. it is like the guy on his smoke break who keeps saying everyone should quit, it may be true but it is obnoxious unless you are doing something about tit.
---

Fair enough.

I just don't know what you find obnoxious about observing, examining or even discussing our failures.

---
I also find the constant repition of not being able to do anything a cop-out. http://www.christianchildrensfund.org/ pennies a day.
---

What exactly am I copping out of?

I don't hold myself as any sort of example. I don't ever say I am not ABLE to do anything - only that I don't do much. You will notice that I don't ask you what your contributions are - because I don't care.

---
"You may just be barfing out ideas and not intending them to be judgemental, but with repition they are and in light of your actions they are even more offensive because you don't apply them to yourself."
---

I find this interesting:

I DO judge the world and humanity for its many failures. You agree with those judgments - but find fault in my repeated discussing of them. You take offense that I do not take more action on a micro level - even though almost ALL of my observations are on a macro level.

You judge me for my admitted failures - yet you seem to let humanity off pretty lightly.

Why is that?

---
When it comes to fundamentally changing how our govt/societies operate I see nothing but another cop-out for you not doing anything yourself.
---

Again, it is not a cop out. I don't need to prove anything to you or society. Charity is not a requirement.

My call for change is completely unrelated to my personal failings as a humanitarian.

---
"You seem to want to shift the blame for you not doing anything to the world in general."
---

What a sad, presumptive view on what I am trying to say. I can only assure you I have no intention of shifting blame... only highlighting and discussing it.

---
"I remember a skinny Indian once said, "you must became the change you want to see." Calling for change without doing anything to achieve it is a waste of time. Especially when the changes you seem to want in govt are things you can affect but choose not to."
---

Well sure - and I assure you on a personal level I affect change in my life. What I talk about on this website is primarily for my own entertainment - and if you take some time to wander through some of the changes that I want to see affected you wouldn't be so glib as to my capacity to affect them.

---
"Talking for the sake of conversation and exchanging ideas is great, but when you have a goal and do nothing but talk about it you have done nothing."
---

Dude, 'goal'?

I have no goal in life except to be happy - one that I have been rather successful in achieving and maintaining.

---
"And to act like it is something, to pretend that you have made a change, to pat yourself on the back, to neglect real action or change because of your little uber chats makes you a joke."
---

I don't. This is what is so confusing about your negative reaction to my words. I don't pretend that I have made a change, I don't pat myself on the back, and I most certainly don't neglect real action or change >because< of these little uber chats.

Wrong. Flat out wrong. There is a lot you can do.

---

Dude, I know there is a lot I CAN do. I don't. That doesn't marginalize my observations, it makes me lazy, unmotivated and apathetic.

Just like everyone else that I observe philosophically and actively failing humanity.

---

"To be honest (and I am not judging here) your charity work is a joke."

---

OF course you are judging me. That was the entire reason you asked your question. Much like Caul said in his response - as a society we judge people based on their actions. You have decided that because my action is limited in this specific area, that my observations are compromised and you not only discount what I have to say - you condemn me for having the audacity to say it.

---

"All those -athons are social events that you have fun at, "

---

It is still a charity event that I did not have to participate in - and I guarantee you that even as paltry as my charitable participation might be - it is substantially more than some people.

You asked - I replied.

---
"the art thing I am guessing it is something you enjoyed to make or wasn't that expensive."
---

What an amazing capacity for utter marginalization you have. Why would you guess that? Why would my enjoyment of the creative process affect the generosity behind it's donation? .

Can you honestly not see how negative you are?

---
It has been a long time since I helped at a food bank or helped build anything for the needy but that has real visible effect on people's lives it alleviates suffering and there is absolutely nothing in the world stopping from doing it.
---

See this? THIS? Is good material. This is something that people can connect to - do you really need to preface this kind of commentary with all that bile?

---
I am not busting your chops here, all I have done in quite sometime is charity runs and walk-athons. If helping the destitute in your own country isn't glamorous enough there is always CCF which will make a very real difference in someones quality of life.
---

Look, I agree.

And my lack of charity work has nothing to do with the glamour - it is purely time and motivation based. I am well aware of the various organizations out there that make very real impacts in the lives of people all over the world.

I am also very aware of the mega corporations, the inefficiency of corrupt international governments, the massive exploitation and manipulation of 3rd world countries.

I see things on a macro level and comment on how absurd they are - this does not mean I don't recognize the potential for change on a micro level. I just know that unless things are fundamentally changed at the highest of levels all of the various acts of personal altruism will be relatively meaningless because society itself is failing.

"Why do you feel my lack of gratuitous donation of both time and money somehow marginalizes my philosophical observations of humanity?"
