What's wrong with polygamy? People campaign for gay rights and gay marriages, but no one really looks at polygamy. I know Utah had to ban it to become a state, but why is it still banned now? And isn't that kind of banning a religious principal?(Help me out here, I don't know a whole lot about Mormons)
I'm not really saying guys should have more than one wife. Hell its tough keeping one woman happy, if I married two I don't think my credit could take it.
Just wondering what everyone thinks.

For the record: The Momons never accepted polygamy. Instead, they previously engaged in the practice of polyginy. The difference is that polygamy is the practice of having more than one mate; in polyginy, only the husband may have multiple female mates. The female is restricted to one.
Just for the record.

Dream on Mick, when women live together for some weird reason their menstrual cycles align. So your two wives would always be ON at the same time. Imagine duo PMS - TWO angry weeping women.
You'd be implicated in your fourth murder charge in no time :o)

Right and wrong are some of the hardest things to tell from each other in some cases. Sometimes, there is just a line that you cannot cross (public nudity, swearing in public). But who draws that line?

Religions are for the religious. "
Stunning words from our resident retard.. You are my new mortal enemy
you fucking douche.
As far as this post is concerned, I don't think that ANY law should be
based even REMOTELY on any religion. Unfortunetly, the millions and
millions of closed minded "christians" have a voice bigger than mine.

by the way, EvilZurr:
Polygamy wasn't "founded" by the Mormons. It was practiced during the times of the Old Testament, then was reinstated with the founding of the LDS church. It wasn't so much a Mormon idea, quite the contraray, it's a very old, common idea and practice from the times of the Bible, yet strangely, I've not heard anyone pick on the Old Testament figures for practicing plural marriage...

Well... I could go into a rant about this, but I'm trying to avoid it like the plague.
I will say this though: You will die a lot quicker if you're married to multiple partners.
I dislike the idea of legalizing polygamy because it would mean more work for me. That coupled with a need for tax reform makes it more work then it's really worth.
This trend occurs, just not in any 'governmentally sanctioned' way.

a few reasons my bigamy and other forms of polygamy arent cool in the US.
1. the founders were mormons, who's beliefs were shunned by the majority (christians). therefore, the thought of ploygamy became evil, as it was the ideal of the evil.
2. the legal implications would be hell. would marriage still go 50/50? what if you married tho women with the same last name?can you third wife marry another man?
3. the basis of polygmatic (is that a word?) beliefs focuses on a superior male, which does not bode well with equality groups, feminists, and spiteful divorcees. youd get so much bullshit from those groups, not to mention the media, that polygamy would be illegal just to keep the peace.
4. if polygamy were legal, that would mean ALL THE PLAYBOY BUNNIES WOULD BE LEGALLY BOUND TO HIM. do you want to make that kind of sacrifice in the name of expression?
i think polygamy should be legal, but used only when necessary...

Marriage is a religionist idea anyways, so unless the US strays away from the Protestants ideals were are stuck with the idea of one man and one woman. Maybe things will change to just two people regardless of sex but why do we need a legal entity that is marriage?

yeah-- the LDS church has made themselves completley unaffiliated with polygamy practices in this day and age. Anyone who is caught practicing it is excommunicated.

LDS doesn't do that anymore, but there are some fringe groups that still engage in the practice. I've gotten absolutely slewed for saying this, but I don't think that it's the government's business what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes. If you want two wives, go for it but I warn you I can make a man crazy so just imagine what two of me would do ganging up on some poor man.
That being said there are obviously problems with it like the fact that often these sister wives were married off at a very young age. I think that Tom Green guy that Utah took down after he went on whatever talk show that was, don't feel like googling it, married at least one of them when she was maybe 13 or so and that is wrong on so many levels. I also believe that at least some of his harem were on welfare and I don't feel like using my tax money to support that.

I was quite surprised to hear this opinion of someone not completley abhoring polygamy. Being a Mormon, I can't tell you how many times I've told people that and I've gotten the idiot reply of "so, like, you guys have more than one wives? which wife are you?", etc.
Personally, I don't think polygamy would sit right with many people if it was legalized, so rather than fight the law, I think the LDS church just decided to hold off on the whole thing. Besides, teh whole concept of plural marriage applies to the eternities anyway, it's really not that big a player in the current earthly life.

well, the church has outlawed it as well, not just the state, so if Utah could, they wouldn't.... unless those cooky mormons decide to change the rules again ahahha, they do that quite abit... well, muslims still get to have a harem, so yay, +1 for giving me a place to type the word harem.

I don't know shit about this topic, but I would say it was banned in the U.S. for one of two reasons:
1. It would be a nightmare legally.
2. It doesn't gel with the U.S.'s Christian foundation.
Like I said, I don't know shit about this topic.
