I had to delay this post until the Uber St. Patrick Day amateurs were finished posting their "I'm so drunk, look at me, I'm puking green CAMWHORE!!!" posts that seem to permeate Uber every year around March 17.
I was thinking of posting pictures of my broken shoulder right after my Tahoe trip in February but quite frankly, the pictures didn't make me look as tremendous as I usually look so I decided "fuck that". If I knew how, I would post an Xray of the fractures, but then I'd have to try and write some "fictional" account about how I broke my shoulder stopping a mugging or something and I didn't feel like doing that, either. As we all know, Shlongy doesn't do fiction.
Anyway, for those that don't know, can't read, or are just really stupid, St. Patrick's Day - hell, the entire weekend - is a really big deal in Savannah.
Why Savannah, Georgia?
I have no fucking idea. But I attended my first St. Patrick's Day in Savannah back in 1999...I was going to be moving to South Carolina in July of 99 and came down to see how the construction of my house was going. Foolishly, we decided to attendthis "celebration" in Savannah was a day and night over on River Street in Savannah.
Little did we know when we showed up there, there would be us, Mrs. Shlongy and myself, and 499,998 other people, eating, drinking, and trying to piss in one of the 19 Porta Potties they had set up to "handle the crowds".
I have a picture of me from that 1999 visit coming out of one of the porta hoppers, wearing a "Dropkick Murphy's t-shirt" and holding my nose.
We've since then, blown it up to "Lifesize" (4'8" x 12") and framed it- It's now displayed over the fireplace mantle next to the lifesize "George Costanza" cutout that really "sets the room off".
Huge crowds...tons of fights...tons of booze..tons of titties...and a parade that last over 5 hours long and is shown live on Savannah TV stations...(Yes, I said STATIONS). Sold out hotel rooms at hugely inflated rates...the whole ball of waxski.
So back to Savannah and St. Patrick's Day. I have no idea why this deal is so huge down here. Apparently, it's the world's second largest St. Patty's Day celebration behind only Boston- maybe Tim or Adam can confirm this - and it's unique because if you know anything about "River Street", it's basically a brick paved street that runs along the Savannah River, lined with bars, restaurants, a few shops...and NO OPEN CONTAINER LAWS!
Yessiree, you can grab a drink in one bar...walk right out the door, and cruise into the next bar...anytime of the year.
I think the only other city where you can do that is New Orleans.
Anyway, we went back this year because our radio stations sponsor a couple of stages with bands playing all night Friday night...all day and night Saturday, and even Sunday. Of course, on Sunday, they're usually standing in a pile of puke and piss - maybe even some poop (sorry I didn't get pictures).
We started on Saturday morning by not driving anywhere NEAR downtown Savannah, because of the parade...no parking...and the estimated 700,000 people attending this year.
We parked at a hotel on the OTHER side of the River and water taxied over - just Mrs. Shlongy and I, and 400 of our closest friends that we didn't know on that trip.
After docking, and walking WITH the parade for about an hour, we finally made it to our destination- "City Market" - another three blocks worth of bars, restaurants, bands, food booths, and ONE Porta Potty!
It was rocking...packed wall-to-wall, and for every 14 fat broads wearing their pants way too low showing off their God-awful "playboy Bunny tattoos", there was actually a smokin' hot broad.
Oh, and a lot of drunk dorks that would remind you of, say, sicosemen and his group of "friends".
Anyway, we hit all the hot spots in City Market, and settled at my favorite all time Savannah bar, which I really have no business being in since the average age of the people that go there is around 21.5. But it's my favorite because they have live entertainment - not COVER bands but punk, thrash, rockabilly, honkytonk, etc. It's called the Jinx. It used to be called Velvet Elvis and that WAS my favorite bar. Great name.
Anyway, we cruise in there...I haven't seen ome of the staff there in a year. Instantly, because Shlongy is famous - not only on Ubersite but at this bar - they took off the Johnny cash they were blaring over their sound system and put on, you guessed it; Frank Stallone.
No, they put on the Dropkick Murphys! Yay.
So we had some beers - I, being loaded and the arbiter of "good taste" was drinking PBR's in the can with "Jameson" shots for chasers...Mrs. Shlongy went with the cheap stuff...Harp in bottles.
3 hours later we were blessed with a free afternoon concert, I guess you could call it by this teremendous HonkyTonk band called The Tennessee Rounders. I suggest you look them up or check them out if you get a chance. It rocked.
To make a long, boring story short, we got out of Dodge around 7pm...home to SC by 9pm...to get home to SC through the DUI roadblocks takes a unique talent that apparently, I have.
Probably because in "real life", even if I'm sober, I look drunk.
And vice versa.

The St. Patrick's Day festivities ended with hundreds of police officers turning into baby sitters.
They broke up fights and temper tantrums, stopped people from urinating where they shouldn't and forced people to put down their bottles.
The drunken revelry resulted in more than three times as many arrests this year over last year's St. Patrick's Day, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said.
Police arrested 141 people this St. Patrick's Day, Wilson said.
Thirty eight arrests were made on March 17, 2006.
Police arrested a total of 223 people from 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Sunday, Wilson said. Last year, there were 159 arrests over the three-day festival.
"It was the busiest I've seen since the late '90s," said Capt. Gerry Long, the festival commander.
Although the jail and emergency rooms were full, police reported no serious incidents or injuries.
"It was the standard close of a long day of hard drinking," Chief Michael Berkow said.
Police reports show most of the arrests involved individuals who apparently had too much to drink:
There was Paul Hesselblad, 25, who was sent to jail after he fought some revelers and then spit on a police officer.
There was Traci Whitaker, 24, who ran into a street sign before running into a bar. She was later arrested after she refused to stop yelling, police said.
Kyle Brown, a sailor from King's Bay Naval base, was arrested after he threw a beer keg at a crowd in City Market.
Most of the injuries occurred during minor fights or from intoxicated people falling down. Several people had to be treated after officers used pepper spray.
There was Brian Johnston, 26, who shoved an officer, and Ronald Miller, 24, who jumped on his back. Both were sprayed, according to police.
Police also reported several robberies, including one in a portable potty.
Sarah Hannawi told police she was attacked when she entered a portable toilet facility in Forsyth Park. The North Carolina college student said she opened the door and was pushed inside. The suspect ordered her to hand over cash, a report stated.
He took $15-$20, then urinated before fleeing. The masked man was last seen getting into a blue Chevy Cobalt then heading south on Abercorn Street, according to the police report.
Most of the shenanigans stopped around 2 a.m. Sunday, an hour after the bars closed.
"Once they stopped serving alcohol, they slowly filtered out," Long said.

I was in Savannah on St. Patty's Day as well, however I didn't get a chance to make it to River Street because I had to watch the parade with relatives. Next year, though, next year.
Oh, and DKM kicks some major ass. Saw 'em at Warped two years ago and have never had as much fun at a concert than I did at that set.

i went to the dropkick murphy's concert in boston on saturday. good show. the douchebag boston regge rock band that opened for them sucked balls, but the dropkicks were pretty solid, as usu al.
it was at a decent sized arena this year, instead of the avalon, where they played in the past. wasn't quite as sweet, but was still solid.

I'm surprised about Bad Brains though... especially since once they bailed on DC they pretty much became a NY band... Christ, Jack Rabid is still flying the flag for them. Not that I blame him...the first time I saw them play it felt like my head had been blasted off my shoulders.

Interesting... those DC bands were my introduction to the stuff that came and was coming out of the UK since they were all into Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Wire, etc. Especially Wire... I didn't really make the connection at the time, but when I listen to a lot of that stuff now, the influence is unmistakable. Not so much the over-all sound a lot of the time, but the way the songs were arranged and progressed. And 25-ish years later, Wire still sounds just as good...and surprisingly, not dated at all.

I never got into the DC hardcore scene, which is ironic since Mrs. Shlongy grew up outside of DC.
Bad Brains, Minor Threat, et.al....I know the critics and the kids loved those bands but I never did.
I wasn't big on the California hardcore scene either, back then...Germs, Nuns, Weirdos, Avengers, Fear, Circle Jerks, etc....I was pro NYC and England/Ireland.
I caught California on the second wave with first, Bad Religion, then Epitath Records.
