“We are haunted; well that’s what people say”

Thomas remembered how when he was hired the hotel manager shared this little fact. With a smirk and a disbelieving tone to his voice that seemed to be trying to convince himself more than the new security guard.

Having grown up in some pretty rough urban neighborhoods, Thomas didn’t scare easily. He managed to stay mostly out of trouble as a kid and had plans to become a police officer. The waiting time to get on the force was spent as a bouncer at a few clubs and now into security.
Not where he wanted to be but it paid the rent.

“I’m not worried about it sir, there are enough real things to be afraid of to waste time jumping at shadows.”
And with that he started as security at the Roosevelt Hotel.

The job was pretty easy considering Hollywood gets a little sketchy at night when the sight seers are all gone. Shooing away the random homeless from the side door was about the extent of his action on the outside. The guests were more upscale than the area but they had their moments too. More than a few drunks had to be escorted out of the pool area when the private parties were going on. Most weekends the pool lounge was rented out by some studio big shot or a movie wrap party. Paparazzi tried to sneak in from time to time hoping to get a few pics to sell. It was understandable, he saw Lohan making out with another chick one night, and had the chance to see Paris’s tits both before and after implants.

When the Hollywood elite weren’t busy doing blow off one another or drowning in Goose, the hotel ran like any other normal place.

Normal if it includes paranormal investigators.

The Roosevelt’s reputation for being haunted attracted ghost hunters and psychics quite often. They would claim that not just today’s stars came to the Roosevelt but ones long dead as well. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard would show up in the suite named after them, and the ghost of Errol Flynn in the hotel bar. Room 928 where Montgomery Cliff’s ghost hangs out and the full length mirror that was once in Marilyn Monroe’s room, people claim that they see a pretty blond standing behind them when they look in it.
“Bullshit” was Thomas’s opinion. Over active imaginations and idiots, his rounds take him past that mirror all night long and up and down the ninth floor hallway.
“Never saw anything” would be the response if you asked him.

Jessica worked the front desk most evenings when Thomas was there. She was in college taking travel and tourism, so this was good real life experience for her. Jessica did the job well and professionally. Like Thomas she was aware of the stories of the hotel and also like him, left that nonsense to the superstitious house keeping staff. The operations of a popular hotel had enough actual issues that needed attention.

Because it was right across the street from Grumman’s Chinese Theater and the Walk of Fame, family guests would not be uncommon during the week. Families mean children and children bring their own special headaches to a hotel. When the Front desk phone rang that Wednesday night it was nothing Jessica hadn’t heard before.

“Hello, guest services, this is Jessica how may I help you?”

“I can’t find my daddy; can you help me find my daddy?”
The voice of a young girl, five possibly six years old was calling from the House phone off the lobby, down near the pool. Rest rooms are down that way so more than likely the girl’s father was inside.

“Sure honey, if you stay right there I will send my friend Thomas to come see you and he will help find your daddy, ok?”

“Ok” the small voice replied and then hung up the receiver.

Grabbing the walkie-talkie Jessica called Thomas.
“Tom, I have a lost little girl calling from the house phone near the pool can you go see to her? She’s looking for her father.”

“On my way.” Thomas was one floor up and quickly descended the stairs to the lobby. Arriving at the House phone the little girl was nowhere in sight. He checked in both restrooms and found them both empty. The door to the pool was locked as well.
Checking the dark ballroom and the lobby with no luck, he radioed back.

“Jess, the kids not here, I’m checking the restaurant now.”

He looked in the restaurant and behind the bar. Jessica’s phone rang again and the girl asked “Did you find my daddy? I want to play”

“No, not yet. I need you to please stay right there so Thomas can find you.”

Growing impatient the girl replied “I want to play now! Can you play with me?”

“No sweetie” Jessica replied “I have work to do. But if you just stay right th…”

“You’re ugly!” the little voice exclaimed and slammed the phone down.

Grabbing the radio “Tom the little girl is by the phone right now can you get over there and bring her back.”

“I can’t do that Jess”

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“Because I’ve been standing right next to it for the last five minutes.”
Thomas picked the phone off the stand and held it in his hand, its receiver still seated in the cradle.

Jessica was unable to speak when the phone rang again and she picked it up hearing only a little girl’s giggle on the other end.

I dont care about winning anything, it's all about Halloween, ghost stories and such.
I love this holiday.

Good stuff.

apollo is an intelligent guy, Anglophile, and he may be doing this just to get a rise. Though I have to give him credit for his consistency. As far back as I can remember he's been -2ing reposts.

More importantly, whoever wins or loses this "contest" is irrelevant. It's more to the point of trying to get some actual writing going on again.

I am actually trying to write a new story.
We'll see how that goes.

Boy, those Germans have a word for everything.
