The demise of communities, and what we can do

Ubersite is/was a community of people. It’s failing. Here’s what we can do:

Well, hang on before I get to a numbered list here…

Let me start with an observation, and then put this in to perspective. My observation is that most people are aware of “click-bait.” Everyone wants your attention (including me!). They want your attention because:

- They’re selling something
- They’re promoting themselves
- They’re running for office

Look: I’m 38 years old. I’m a white male. I’m an American. I’m gay, though I’ve been described as “straight-acting.” And I’m unbelievably handsome.

I’m not selling anything.

I’m not looking for a date.

And I’m not a politician.

Communities are built upon trust and time. The more you trust someone, and the more time you spend with them to build this trust, results in a personal connection. If you have several personal connections built with at least three people, you have a community. In computer terms, for bart (because I think he gets it still):

var person = false; // initialize variable to assume the person is NOT trustworthy

if (person === true ) {
alert(‘Great,’ + person + ‘ is trustworthy!’);
} else {
alert(“Go elsewhere and find someone who is!”);

My all-time favorite teacher in all of my schooling was, dryly enough, my technical writing teacher. He taught me how to communicate clearly and directly. He didn’t accept flowery prose, passive tenses, or content meant for an unspecified audience . I let his knowledge sink in with me because I just liked guy, and I trusted him. This might explain why I’m so fantastic at writing.

I love lists. I try not to tell people what they should do. With that in mind, here are my suggestions:

1. Don’t write or comment until you take yourself outside of yourself and understand how this might benefit a community of people.
2. Discourage any shit-heads by verbally punishing them.
3. Encourage thoughtful and kind people.*

That’s it!

Be well, old and new friends.

* includes but isn't necessarily me

bart: I get it.

For me, this is an online diary with feedback. I check back here once in a while to review my thoughts from over a decade ago and compare them to my current thoughts. This is meaningful to me, so thanks for keeping it alive all these years.

I only come here when I’m drunk or high, because those are the only times I feel like I’m worth a damn.

I don’t have anything I’ve written saved locally, and I don’t really care. What’s more interesting to me is other people’s responses. Often times flattering. That’s what I like.

Spam: You nailed it with “too much effort “. Web design and development takes an incredible amount of time. Bart don’t have it. I suggest you sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. If you want something better then hop on Facebook.

Here’s a quote that drives my thinking:

“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” - Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

The internet is too large and distracting for small independent sites to remain meaningful. Without nefarious intent, it's difficult to keep a site like this up and running let alone attract new people to make it grow.

When I was younger and cared more and didn't have other obligations, I would spend a lot of time trying things that would end up being a waste of time, but I don't have that type of time anymore and small changes likely won't have any noticeable impact.

As far as renovating the site and everything going away, the issue stemmed from the obsession of bots and search engines to crawl through everything and try to mine it all for search result matches. People would have posted things a decade earlier with their real name or other sensitive information, not having any idea of the types of privacy impacts that would creep up in the future.

Uber's time came to an end when social media stole everyone away, there is only so much time to be bored at work.

The largest nail in the coffin was the renovation a few years ago when the site went down and all the old posts went away. The few that were here assumed the site was dead and left, and any new blood that found their way here never saw the amazing writing from years past.

It's a nice thought, but you're wrong on all counts.

This site is no longer the community it once was because Bart never adapted or pushed it to suit modern norms. That's no slight on the man. He's smart enough to have built this is all out of nothing in the first place so I'm sure that he knows exactly how to make this all thrive in the modern age. I'm guessing that he just chose not to, that maybe it was a compromise too far, or just too much goddamn effort. Either way, this whole site is a shell, a mausoleum to an empire long since past - beyond resurrection.

I'm glad it exists and I hope dearly that it continues for a long time to come. But only so I can come back and remember what once was.

Well, you can't always expect everyone to just stay the same way or even stay in the same place.

Most will eventually move on...

...and or will grow up...

...or not and become like Donald Trump. WHOOPS DID I SAY THAT OUT LOUD? Damn.

1 contradicts 2 and 3. Does verbally punishing those YOU see as shit-heads benefit the community? Does it encourage thoughtful & kind people or stir up a mob mentality?
